very nice boats for sure...if I ever decide to upgrade that would be the technology I will be looking for, but It will probably be out of my price range. I can dream now :)Thanks for the info

No prob. The entry ones 18.5' with a 4.3 are around 20k. I think my friend might of paid a little less, since his boat is a 2010 model, but it was still new at the dealership.

Quick question guys... When grinding this stuff down how is one to know when you've went deep enough? I started today but quickly realized I was either going to need to cut everything alot closer to the hull or invest in a 7" grinder to take the glass and wood down quicker. If not I see grinding taking a long while. I got a 2x2 area ground down and had already almost worn out one flap disc. Hard to tell when you've done enough when there's two over lapped layers of thick woven to get through. And I thought pulling out foam was my biggest hate! Fiberglass dust in 100 degree heat takes the cake! I wonder how much payments on one of those new Larsons would be....

Its definitely a labor of love. I can't stand the grinding, but once its all done, its ok after that. What areyou grinding down? The old stringers? I'd cut them as close as you can, then basically you want to get down to the hull and rough that up.

I got everything cut down as low as I could with a sawsall but I'm thinking I'm going to take a cut off wheel and try to get it cut flush. Some places still have solid wood in them so it'll take some time to grind it down. I'm mostly just afraid of going to deep in the strakes.

Use a cutoff wheel on your angle grinder, it'll go fast. as long as its flat to the hull you aint going to cut through, just be careful. I cut through my hull in one spot, it was no big deal. I just fixed it when I had resin mixed up next.

I also found that a diamond blade works well and pretty fast too ... There is no easy way it simply sucks !! All u can do is take a lot of breaks and be carefull i did mine here in nc in 105 degree also wheather also .. walmart sells a grinding attachments for a drill it is actually a paint and rust remover in the automotive section by the fiberglass repair kits when u get it all cut this will rough it up nice n fast n easy it also is goo for taking off carpet glue for those who have that issue ...

I had to use a 7" grinder for the large cut downs. I found a place the deals with the returns from harbor freight, and I got one for 20 bucks.

basically after you have everything cut out and ground flush with a cut off wheel get your good old faithful grinder out again, I used my 4.5 inch with a 36 grit disc for final grinding...it will cut through anything and go along way. Now it depends how your boat was made, basically you want to grind down through the roving down to at least to the lay up layer and get as much of the layup layer off...you will see when you are grinding that you will start to get the fiberglass hair strands showing up that is your layup layer. You can basically quit any time in that layer but the more off the better..I went just beyond the lay up layer in alot of spots and come to what I call laminate layer mine showed up as little circles like along the sides.
This is the worse part of the job and when it is over you will feel good :)

Thanks for the tips guys... I'm headed back after work tomorrow to see what I can get accomplished. I think what frustrates me the most is that the boat is being stored 20 mins from the house. Thankfully it's between here and work. Let y'all know how it goes.

Well guys I'm back... Spent the week doing work when I could. Cut the stringers out lower on Monday... Went back Wednesday suited up and went to grinding.. Fooor about five minutes until the cheap grinder burnt up.. Went Thursday and got a porter cable from lowes.. Cheap but its getting the job done as long as I baby it and keep it cool. Started grinding Friday with some 40 grit screw on discs from home depot... Burned through two in less than an hour. So I went and got a few dewalt 32 grit from lowes today and got to it... Got in about three hours today.

This was about midway through today

When I quit.... About 1/4 of the way done.

Still need to either get the outer stringers either cut down some more or grind them down. Most of the hull outside of them just need to be buzzed a little since there's no tabbing on the hull there. Its coming along though... If I can keep my lazy butt at it this whole week I should have it all done by next weekend.

Looking good bud, what I found best was using a cut off disc on the grinder to cut them off flush, they are pretty cheap. Then when you hit it with the sanding disc it comes off real quick.
Cheers Jack

Re: 1992 Marada 1800MVB.. stringer, transom, deck restore

I'm finally seeing the light at the end of the grinding tunnel! I've worked everyday since Saturday for around three hours each day. And I must say once I finally get in there and start working it's really not that bad! I took yesterday to get the rest of the outer stringers up.. Cut the inner skin off them and seeing as how they were bedded in "air"... I was able to get a pry bar under them and with a little work the wood and tabbing all easily came loose in one piece.

Once I swept and blew everything out I noticed how many spots I missed... I still have the bow to do along with the transom but the end is definately near!

There's an issue with the transom that I need a solution for.. I don't know if more fiberglass pulled off with some of the plywood or if it was slopped together like this... But the transom has a varying thickness all over. It's fairly even on the top 3/4 then it dips in a good bit and has waves all across the bottom. What do I need to do here to get a flat surface to glue the wood to? Need to figure this out along with how I'm going to do the keel stringer since they are the first things going in!

I'm mix up some structural Peanut Butter and use a 8" plastic trowel to fill in the gaps and ripples. Wipe it all down with Acetone first.

I'm using poly resin so is that still a repair option? Know youve talked about doing fixes like that using thickened epoxy. Would definately be a simple solution though. Thanks again Wood!

Nothing but the half inch thick bilge area to do... What do they build these up with.. I grinded through in one spot and it almost looks like just thickened resin... Who knows.

Still trying to decide if I want to tear these out and remake them.. Nothing really wrong with them but theres some spots I can't get to and sand so I can apply gelcoat.

So I've still got the design of the keel stringer that I need help with. As you can see in an earlier post, the original one was made of eight non-bonded section of 2x2s. I'd like to keep from having that many sections so what are my options?

Re: 1992 Marada 1800MVB.. stringer, transom, deck restore

I took the day off from grinding today and decided to do some research. Id heard of someone using PVC pipe for the keel stringer but never have seen photos of it. Well I found one done in a 19' Mako center console. 3" pipe cut in half.

If this is somehow bedded, filleted with structural PB, and tabbed to the hull with multiple layers of 1708 would it be strong enough to serve it's purpose? I'm thinking that remembering how this area was done to begin with this should be sufficient if not alot stronger than it ever was. Am I correct here guys, or just barking up the wrong tree?

FINALLY got the bilge ground out.. Took two days and five flap discs to get a 2'x2' section done!

Headed tomorrow to check on fiberglass supplies from a local supplier.. Might even come home with some and start working on leveling the fiberglass on the transom and maybe get a template made up for the wood. Going to Florida next week For a much needed vacation, so I'll hit it hard when I get back. Until then I still need an opinion on how I mentioned doing the keel in the last post.
