It really does feels good to have that grinding basically done! Finally made it back from vacation in Destin. Go figure tropical storm Lee would make landfall while we were there. So we spent half the trip watching it rain. So now I'm back and ready to get back on this boat. Talked to my local fiberglass shop today and it's looking like I can get everything but the 1708 from them. Resin is going to run around $110 per 5 gallons. Which leaves me getting the 1708 from uscomposites. What would be a good idea on how much to order... I'd considered doing the tape but may just cut my own from a 50" wide roll. Would 25 yards sound like enough or should I look at getting more?

Picture of the outer rainbands of the storm coming in.

Re: 1992 Marada 1800MVB.. stringer, transom, deck restore

Well guys it's been awhile... I've been side tracked and haven't been able to work on the boat nearly as much as I had liked. Plus I'm at that frustrated point with it. I installed the transom yesterday.. Letting the pl cure fully and I'll tab that in... First thing tomorrow I'm going to get all the stringers cut and ready for resin. Here's where I'm stuck... What's going to be easier... Leaving the height higher than deck height and cutting after everything is installed... Or try and get it cut perfect before installing? I'd rather go for the first way and cut afterwards but I can't wrap my head around how to mark on the stringers where the existing deck height is. It's probably simple but keep in mind the impact poly fumes can have on the mind. :D Any ideas or help you guess can give me would be much appreciated.

Whew I'm tired... Worked all day yesterday and today until storms hit... Have all the stringers cut and over 80% cut to deck height. Still need to cut down the bow area and build the stepouts in the bilge.

These are from last week... Getting the transom coated in csm.

Transom glued in... Don't worry it was clamped alot more than this... Pulled all but one off after it was all cured.

Starting to rough in the stringers.

Didn't get a picture at the end of today... Lightning was getting close so it was a rush to get everything covered up. I'll work on tabbing the transom in tomorrow so I can get the bilge stringers right... Finish up those on Tuesday... Get some resin on them and hopefully be installing by the weekend. Got to start rolling... Cold weather is coming fast!

I just wish we could get some rain. Those stringers look perfect.

Thanks Jay I'll gladly trade the rain for some warmer weather if y'all got it... Everything from the transom to the front bulkhead was a piece of cake but those front four stringers turned into a days work by themselves. Tabbed in the transom today... And I'll repeat what's been said many times before... If you can afford 1708 it is amazing stuff to work with!

All done!

I've got a little grinding in the bow to do tomorrow then ill install the keel stringer. Also have to skin the transom tomorrow if it gets warm enough. But on to a question.... The bow eye was originally bolted through the keel stringer which rotted out. I'm going with the PVC idea to replace that stringer so I need a backing for the eye to mount to. What are my options? The hull is at a steep V so it's not making it any easier. I'd like something more solid and permanent than wood just don't know if I have room for anything else.

fine looking job there, keep it up. nice option of the transom being separate from the side pieces . mine was in 3 pieces and the sides had some intrusion but the main transom was solid as a rock. I like the 3 piece transom :)

which side pieces would you be referring to? What you see is all there was to mine. There are two mounting blocks on either side of the tunnel where the tie downs mount but nothing else other than that. I got out easy on that part.

Got the transom skinned today so the transom is DONE! Got the bow eye area ground down so I could pull it out. Already figured this but this is how it was mounted... Just a small washer on it...

I've found info on a SS backing plate from west marine that you bend to fit the V and glue it in place but can't get the website to work. I'm considering something of that design and running the keel stringer up to that plate. Now on to the mad rush to get as much done before temps stay below 60 for good! Anyone want to let me borrow a heated garage?:D

In the picture from the wet fiberglass tabs it looks like there are little sections at the bottom of the transom going out to the sides ..you have your tools sitting on it and some in front of it in the second picture. I just thought it looked like a 3 piece transom..if you don't understand have a look at my thread and pictures. I didn't mean anything other then a 3 piece is easier to repair and usually the center never needs replacing as all transoms I have seen on here usually rot from the sides in. I myself feel the 3 piece helps with this problem :) and mine was solid in the middle

Oh I see where your talking about... Just fiberglass there... The hull steps in about a foot below the rubrail... See just above the smart tabs..

That little step forced me to move those trim tabs a foot further in than originally intended but still works. My transom seal was leaking so side pieces or not mine had no choice but to rot!

How well does fiberglass stick to aluminum? Just realized I could get some 1/8" plate from work and shape it to fit up there... Glue it in and glass over it if necessary.

Don't you just love the 1708? Your layup looks perfect. Just keep plugging away.

Keel stringer glued in...

Will two layers of 1708 over this be sufficient or will more be needed? Hoping to have this all glassed by the weekend so I can start putting in the rest of the stringers.

If you mean two layers over the keel stringer, I would say yes.

Yes the keel stringer is what I was referring to... I'll try a 6" strip first if it's going to be wide enough, then lay a 10" over that.

I would recommend washing the PVC with the PVC cleaner before glassing. it removes the Shiny exterior film from the surface and will allow the resin/glass to adhere much better. I'd als recommed scuffing the surface with 60 grit paper prior to laying the glass. Are you using epoxy or Poly? IMHO Epoxy would work much better in this application. Not sure how well Poly will adhere to the PVC.

I was planning to sand it all down really well but didn't think about the cleaner. I searched as much as I could and everything I found showed poly having a good bond to PVC if prepped properly.. Guess we will see how it goes. Thanks for the tips Wood!

Great advice. I installed a piece of PVC in my bilge drain so the wood wasn't exposed, I actually scuffed it really well then wiped it with acetone, that worked very well, and the epoxy adhered very well.

Hey Guys newbie to the boat community here i just got my fist boat on the first of the month. the deck was soft but all the stingers are solid along with the transom, i was wondering if you had a suggestions of what i should do to fiberglass the new deck as i have never worked with it. BTW marada the boat is looking good hopefully i can get mine in the same condition and get it in the water before the end of the year (thats the only plus about living in FL) My boat is a 19' tri hull around a 1977 but the title has it listed as a homemade 2005 w/140 mercuriser will post pics if any one thinks they can identify what boat it is. will be starting my own post soon. Sorry for the book on your post marada

Ya your best off to start your own thread, and get advice there for it. Good luck.

No biggie Ryan.... Will take all the onlookers I can get... Will even take some helpful hands to fiberglass if they were offered! :D but as parris mentioned it's best to start your own thread.. Better chance of folks viewing and answering your questions there... Plenty of knowledgable folks here to help!

On to other things... I swung by where the boat is... Well the "pieces" of boat... To see if the pl had dried fully. Thinking I over.. Well actually I know I over did it with the pl. I tried to create fillets and left it a little thick. It skinned over and hardened on the outside but inside is still completely wet. I'm sure it'll cure eventually, like around Christmas but I don't have that long. I'm going to look at it again tomorrow and see what I can do with it... What I get for rushing I suppose.
