Re: 1992 OMC 350 5.7 King Cobra 260hp
I was under the impression the clutch dog king was gone after 1989. The catalog must be referring to the regular cobra?
There's 2 "cobras"
Dog-Clutch and Cone-Clutch
OMC called many drive packages "King"
Before and including 1989, the "King was the 460 (dog-clutch) model. After 1989, they called more than one combination "King"
It really doesn't mean much at all. There was several different drives. Before 1989, 3 different (dog-clutch) drives held from about 60-108oz of oil (the 108oz oil capacity model being the one behind the 460)
1990 was the first year for the Cone clutch drive which was NOT a volvo joint venture drive.
Somewhere in the mid 90's, Volvo and OMC agreed to jointly produce drives (SX) and the drives from that point on was Volvo. It was not "the same" as the earlier joint venture drive. (although very similar)
Early 90's (cone clutch) drives are the most rare and since they also made a LOT of dog-clutch drives, they still used them until they were sold out (on the smaller engine packages)
After about 90 or so, the 7.4L/7.5L (1990 only) and 8.2L engines ONLY came with the newer cone clutch drive. It was a mix with the smaller engines until 93 or 94.......
You can verify all this by going to BRP's parts site and looking at the parts breakdown for the different years. It's obvious which engines got which drives from 90 on....
