Hello to everyone, I am new to these forums as well as saltwater boating.
I just purchased a used boat to use in the bay in NJ and it has a 1993 Evinrude 115.
I checked the compression and all 4 were all around 135psi or so.
The boat was senior owned who cannot see anymore so supposively it only has about 100 hours on it.
It looks very clean when I took the top off.
The lower oil was not milky and looked good.
The guy said it def. needs a water pump.

I ended up dropping it off at a outboard repair shop today. The guy said he will check it all out and see thermostat and water pump. But he said not many people will even take a look at older engines and blah blah blah. If he can't get it apart or something like that he said it would be junk and I would need to get another outboard.
I am not really sure what he means but not being able to just change the water pump, etc?
Anyone?
Thanks

Changing the water pump and thermostats are fairly routine items on motors like yours. Most of us do them ourselves with the guidance of factory service manuals and a little help from the people here when we get stuck.

This video will give you an idea of what it involves to change a water pump:

I think you might want to shop around a little more for service, but for most of North America, this is the peak season for maintenance work, getting ready for summer.

Sometimes the driveshaft sticks in the crankshaft and won't come out. It does not happen very often and is due to being reinstalled incorrectly, otherwise known as poor maintenance.

Chads, The line you heard is fairly standard. I also live on the NJ coast, and you cannot buy a motor older than 5 or so years at a local boat dealer. There is no money in it for them..

If your motor needs a waterpump and thermostats, there shouldn't be any issues. Most of the time those items disassemble easily. Headbolts and exhaust bolts tend to suffer corrosion issues and "won't come apart".

BTW - I recommend you get yourself an OMC service manual and learn to do the basic stuff. You will not find anyone to work on older motors, without a ton of verbal abuse and a big bill.
