I have a 1993 Mariner 25hp outboard and the tach works for a minute or so when i start the boat then dies. I have checked the rectifier with the leads disconnected and it tests good. The tach works fine in another application so I know its not the instrument. Has anyone ever run across a rectifier that tests good without power and when applied power will fail? I am trying to get a handle on this and can't. It appears the battery is not charging also. The stator tests good with a multimeter so I know its not that.Would a bad battery cause this? If anyone has any ideas I would be grateful.

If the stator tests good and its not charging then most likely the rectifier is failing.

Thats kinda what I thought. The only thing that was throwing me was the fact that the rectifier bench tested fine. I think I'll get a new one and see if thats it.

Thanks for the reply

Can't he disconnect the rectifier and run the tach straight off the stator to make sure it's not the stator?
