Hey all,
I'm trying to troubleshoot an issue with the tilt trim and I'm having trouble with some of the wording people use to fill the reservoir. To fill the trim system some say full up position some say tilt it up. etc. I'm trying to determine if I'm filling the thing correctly or if there's another issue.
My issue is My engine was stuck in the up position so I used the manual release valve to relieve the pressure and drop the engine. Later found that the tilt pump plug was out some causing the issue. Then noticed the O-ring was shot on the valve so now it's leaking. I removed it and put a new O-ring in and stopped the leak. The motor now no longer goes up and down. The tilt trim rams won't move the motor up. If I raise the motor by hand and brace it there, the tilt rams will come up. I remove the brace and the motor comes right down. I can lower the motor while on top of the rams but not back up. Is this a pump issue, a filling, issue, or a stuck check valve? When filling, I manually lifted the motor all the way as high as it could go, braced it on a trash barrel, then raised the tilt trim rams to fully out. pumped fluid in till over flowing then with the motor still braced, raised and lowered the rams in and out, filling each time in the full extended position. if this is the proper method how much fluid should it take? More than a quart? I know this is wordy but I really need help with this. Thanks!

When you replaced the orings on the manual valve did you get all the old pieces out? I would start there. Making sure manual valve is closed all the way. Sometimes tapping the valve body gently with a plastic dead blow while operating gives promise.

I also believe that you have to run it with the pump up and down several times to bleed it. Manually lifting the motor may allow air to suck past any leak defeating the bleeding process.

To fill....... Have engine in the full up tilt position and lock it there for safety reasons.... Remove fill screw plug.... Fill reservoir to overflowing.... Replace fill screw plug.... Run the engine up and down either electrically or manually, whatever it takes. This will circulate the fluid and bleed the unit automatically at the same time.... Repeat the fill process until the reservoir will take no further fluid. That's it.

Let us know what you find.

Is the full tilt position the tilt rams extended, or motor lifted as high as it'll go? I thought you had to leave the fill screw off the whole time until its completely full. I'll see if I can get to this after work today. Thanks!

Nope!... With that fill screw plug off, fluid will normally leak out as soon as the unit starts its down movement.

I was just spitballing, kinda thinking that a small chunk of the old oring might keep the screw from closing all the way.
