so as far as the bow seat/console area...is that how it was originally? did you use your old for templates? what angle are those kickpanels sitting at? you did a nice job. it looks much simpler seeing how its laid out compared to mine which still has carpet on it. Very nice

This is what I was talking about fngboater...

Second layer of glass down as well as 6 inch tabbing around the sides. One more layer to go but first waiting on my 4th 5 gallon bucket of resin.

Don't do like I did and assume that something is a normal rectangle. note the gap on the seat block. I measured the old but only one side and this was my outcome. fortunatly this is just a bottom for a storage area so I will just lay several layers of glass over it .

The floor will be done in carpet. vinyl is too cheep and gelcoat too expensive.

As far doing yours I will have to decline. I would HATE to deprive you of the great experiance of itching almost every day!!!:p

Give vinyl a second thought. I absolutely LOVE mine http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w200/ezmobee/New Boat/DSCF2504.jpg If you do go carpet, definitely go with a lighter gray or lighter brown. I had navy in my last boat and it was a nightmare to keep clean. Step in the boat one time and it looked filthy again. Dark colors are fine for side panels and what not but keep your floor something "dirt" color :)

Gelcoat really isn't that expensive if you roll it on. Gallon is average around $50. Even seen some folks do the entire deck on one gallon. Probably be a little more stressful to work with though but the finish product is worth it. Also adds an extra layer of water penetration protection.;)

Carpet was bought well before I even started. I did get a light grey though. Not the best for the south with the red clay down here. The boat already had light grey and it was not too bad to keep clean.

I got my gelcoat for 42 bucks a gallon and one gallon did my 18 footer's deck... It's AWESOME. I rolled it on, it's a little bumpy so it's non skid, I didn't want it to be smooth but you can check it out on the last page of my resto thread..

well im sure whatever you do it will look good. me personally i am going to use gel because of the added water protection plus i will be able to hose it off. im afraid of water being trapped in the carpet... and having to clean it.

Incredible how fast you are moving......I agree with your parents - you do good work - and at the speed you do it, you could definately make some money!!

Nice job!

Ok, just a little bit of fiberglass let to do and will be ready to install some carpet. I am going to wait until I have the top half of the boat on until I put the box around the transom in so I need to get the carpet under the bow seats. but there is a bit of a problem in that when I was ordering carpet I mis calculated the square footage. Basically I just figured for the floor. I will need to order some more. I placed the old carpet in the boat to see if I could use it for a template and was amazed at how close it was to origional. see pics below

wildvortex. How did you start to remove the hull?
I drilled a few Holes (2") in my deck noticed the wet foam so i will be pulling it up to. how did you start to pull it up?
seems like the PO on mine also filled in over previous deck. Please let me know how you got started, if you remember what kinda saw you used if any, or if you just used a chisel, etc. thank you. very nice restoration by the way, i am not that far behind you :)

but the only problem i am having is the resin... do we have to use the 2 part resin? its expensive!!! if i will need 12 gallons of the 2 part stuff i cannot afford to go on :(

Re: 1994 bayliner capri 1800 redeck and restring

I started by taking my seat blocks out then a couple of blocks that run down the side of the boat towards the stearn from the seat blocks. It was then that I realized I had to seperate the halves. So, I did that. I don't know anything about your boat or how the older ones are constructed so It is hard for me to say. As for cutting I cut all the tabbing with a 4.5 inch angle grinder with a steel toothed concrete blade. I did this about 2 inches from the hull and then used a circular saw to cut the deck into pieces that I could pull out. be careful though as you need to ensure that you do not cut the hull. I would set my saw to just under shy the depth of the plywood and use a plybar to break the rest free. then I went back with a sanding disk to all my old tabbing and cleaned it up. With wet foam I am almost sure that your stringers are going to be rotten. you will probably be looking at a full restore:(. I don't know of anything to use other than a 2 part resin and mine took almost 20 gallons of it. About 19 to be exact. As for money I am almost $2500 into it now.

Ok thank you. Yeah i will be doing a full restore i am going to remove my cap this weekend.. unfortunately the rivets they used... are a pain and they wont "drill" out so i have to sawzall between cap and rub railing or something to get the cap separated.. as far as resin, it is recommended i use 32oz per 1 yard of 38" 1.5oz mat. so its about 12 gallons give or take 5... sigh
another problem is i wanna get this boat to float by summer, so the fiberglassing is going to be done in winter, under a portable tarp... so maybe a heatsource needs to be considered.. but ya as far as that. thanks for your help

74, remember that you are also going to want to put 1 good coat on the plywood and let it absorb and dry prior to even putting the glass on to ensure you have good bonding. That is going to bump your resin up a good bit. Plus a full roll is 80 yards and 32 oz is 1/4 gallon 80/4 is 20 gallons.;)

Well the rolls I am buying from this guy are 60 Yards, I will make sure to lay down one coat to cover it before i fiberglass for sure, I am looking through literally tens of videos and different blogs to get opinions and of course you and all of the contributers here are all so helpful.
Thank you I will keep updating my progress. I will link my boat in my signature below.

You are a madman! You might as well have built this boat from scratch. But, I give you credit for your determination. You really should consider whether or not you've stumbled upon your calling here. Be a shame to let great talent go to waste. Maybe you could design a better kayak?? (If that's possible). Thanks for sharing this thread with me. PS---Is this a good time to disclose that you're really a grunt, and not a squid?

LOL, Thanks. Yes, I was a grunt but for all intents and purposes and due to the setup of this site I am now naval ranked. Just a little Pyscological Operation going on...might be a flashback!!:D
