Well this is a writeup on my feelings of the 1994 Evinrude 4 hp Deluxe that I purchased a couple weeks ago.
What a motor!!! I wish I purchased one years ago. This motor had only a few hours of use since purchased by the origional owner. So I decided to treat it as a new motor and follow break-in procedures. I am running 25:1 oil ratio as written in the manual and this thing runs smoother than any motor I owned to date. Even the 1995 Yamaha 6 hp motor I owned cannot troll or idle like the Evinrude.
Right now I rent a 12 foot jon boat at our local lake. This motor is very quiet and has very little vibration when trolling. This is what I've been looking for all this time. We trolled along the shore and had such a great time enjoying the shallow bay's where larger boats cannot get into.
One thing I had to try was to see what wide open throttle would do. Well the Evinrude surprised me. The boat got up on plane very easily and stayed on plane at 3/4 throtle with my daughter and myself with our fishing gear in the boat. I did not expect to get any boat up on plane with a 4 hp motor. Well that was enough speed for me. I did not purchase this motor to go fast. I wanted a motor that I can go slow. I plan to look for a displacement hull boat.
I am planning to purchase another boat this year and am starting to look into an efficiant boat that can hold two comfortably but is able to hold three if needed. I was thinking of looking for a Grumman 15 Sport Boat. The boat has a 43" beam so it should be more stable than the 17' grumman canoe that was purchased new in 1973. By the way the 17' canoe was put through hell from two generations of abuse. I used it white watering in upstate New York, many trips down the Hudson river and many fishing trips in the Aderondacks and now it is passed down to our kids. Well it has some minor dents and some good scratches on the bottom but it still does not leak.
Well back to the 1994 Evinrude 4 hp Deluxe. I plan on having this motor for a long time. Is there anything I should keep an eye on or is this motor as reliable as everyone claims. Some parts might be hard to get in the future so which parts should I stock up on.
I would like hear some other experiances from anyone that has an Evinrude or Johnson 4 hp Deluxe with the type of boat you are using. If you have pictures please post them. I wish I had a digital camera.
If anyone has suggestions of other efficiant aluminum boats to look for (prefferably aluminum displacement hull boats if any are still built) that would be a good match for the Evinrude 4 hp Deluxe please let me know.
I would like to see more people getting into smaller and more efficiant boats. Small displacement hull boats are hard to find. I think this type of boating is almost lost. It might be a good type of boating club to start. I know there are times in most of the lakes where we boat on that a no wake is in force from 6:00am until 11:00am on the entire lake. This is a perfect time for boaters like myself to get out with family and enjoy the outdoors.
