well after i sat and had a few drinks lastnight i decided to tackle it just a little more. a friend of mine said when he puts the muffs on his and turns the water on it starts coming out of the pee hole before the motor starts. i do belive something is cloged up in the lower unit any thoughts on that????

Unless there's a dead cat in there, not very likely. The lower and midsection above the gearcase is mostly open space. I still vote for incorrect pump assembly, wrong parts, etc.

it sounds like someone forgot the key or bent the impeller in the wrong direction.. the pump is mechanical in nature..the impellar craets the suction by spinning, drawing and pushuing the water up...

If no water the only a few possibilities are : the impeller is backwards, the key is missing or not in correctly, or when you put the pump togetehr you forgot the orings..

I would pull it apart, and re do it..something didnt sit right.. be sure you turn the impeller blades in the direction of the clockwise turn if your engine is clockwise,,, and reverse if the other way...

NEVER use vaseline in anything! it deteriorates rubber thats why you cant use it w condoms,,,hahaha same reason!! dont use it. what i use is the pneumatic gun oil..for pneumatic nailers.. very light weight and harmless

I don't think that will work, water doesn't come out of my telltale unless the engine is running. 1989 25

actually it can..if you you have the lower unit off and get a hose connected to the pick up tube...

Be sure that the air bleed vent at the top of the impeller housing and the slot above it are open or the pump won't prime.

It does not really make any difference what direction the impeller vanes are in initially because they will turn in the correct direction as soon as the motor runs at speed with water in the pump.

on another note..wildj is correct... where you attach the muffs is a wide open space that only has a plastic inlet screen..which is visible from the outside...if those are clear and open then you should not have any issues.

the only other thing i could think of is if you took the pump off including housing and old gaskets..you could have dropped some old pices of gasket under the pumo and its clogging underneath or you have have blocked the vent channel in the pump itself.. this is the indent or impression just under the cap that houses the impeller..its a strait groove with a round groove circle.... if that plugs the pump wont pump.

if you purchaesd the pump kit..the directions show you that you need to put sealent in various places and grease some rings with the peovided grease.. if by chance you did that and some spread were it shouldnt then that could aslo be an issue.

my best advice is take it all off and reassemble in the correct order and being sure everything is clean and not binding up.

i went and got a new water pump kit got it put on but havent tried it yet.it looks kinda complicated to get the carb off do you really have to remove all the bolts from that starter bracket?

well i got it.....picked up a new water pump kit talked to the mechanic he said grease everything and it should be ok unless a clog in the block put it all togather no water till i start the engine then water spraying out just as it should gonna take it on the lake in the morning just to check thanks everyone
