I have a 90 hp Johnson on a 16 ft boat I recently purchased and I noticed one of the float chambers was cracked leaking gas after my first run with it. I changed both the chambers on the carbs and now it runs hideously bad. Can anyone offer any insight as to why it might be doing this now? Model # J90TLERC Any help would be appreciated. Incase you need to I removed the breather covering then removed the carbs replaced the float chambers, gaskets and the gaskets between the carbs and the block. Reassembling was just the reverse. Thank You

Forgot to add something: When I throttle up on it there is no power gain at all. It just sputters and smokes ALOT!!!

Hi, John.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Hideously bad? What, exactly, does that mean?

are the float bowl used? sitting for a while?
inside the float bowls on the bottem are the main yets.
you got to clean those out realy good.

if you can take them out and compare them with the ones in the old float chamber.
they should have the same number/diameter.

good luck

How did it do on the first run before the problem? I would remove the carbs and take a look at the gaskets between the carb and the block. Might be a problem there, as the float chambers are pretty straight forward if they are the exact same as original. You may also have some linkage problems that could have occured during the dismantle of the carbs. Double check that as well...

May be a stupid question did the float bowls come with the jets installed?

only thing i had to do to the float chambers was put in the screw for the outside and then screw them on the carbs. I checked the gaskets cuz i thought that was the problem too. So i replaced those and it did run slightly better. Before I changed them it would like rev up then almost die down and then rev up again. The original float chambers were plastic these I bought are aluminum.

You never said if you put the old jets in the new float bowls, you mentioned the drain screw and gaskets, but not the jets.

Are you sure that the floats are adjusted properly? They should level when turned upside down. You could be flooding it out or starving it.

Thank You for your input but I fixed it. Thanks everyone for helping. The place I bought the float chambers from were full of it. There were no jets in it. So I had to go to 4 different stores to get the jets but I finally found some for a 115 hp that would work for it and now I am good to go. Thanks again.
