Up until now I didn't really care about having charging capabilities on this motor, but I am running longer and longer using my trolling motor and other accessories, and I'm about to leave on a multi-day fishing trip where I won't have easy access to charging. Anyway, I've not done much diagnosis here, but since my boat runs fine otherwise I'm wondering if I just don't have a shot rectifier. Is this a pretty fair assumption? I checked voltage on the battery while running and it does not change whether the motor is running or not. I haven't checked the leads from the rectifier however, and I haven't tried to read any of the leads from the stator either. 1994 Evinrude E10RELEO if memory serves me.

You are right, it is a 95, sorry! I will check out CDI then and see what they say.

These motors do not have a real high amp output anyway as compared to the newer ones. My 93 9.9 & a 70 "go to motor" with all day trolling, (& using a depthfinder) would maintain the battery for about a week before it started to get low enough that the DF would die when I hit the starter on the 70hp (lots of draw then).

From this I would suspect that if this was your only means of propulsion, you could use it for at least that long before it drained down.

Disconnect the rectifier if it passes the following bench test with an Ohm Meter it is good

Red Lead ------ Black Lead --------- Reading

Red wire ------- Yellow wire --------- High
Yellow wire ----- Red wire ----------- Low
Yellow wire ----- Case Ground ------ High
Case ground -- Yellow wire --------- Low

If you check your stator (two yellow wires one has a grey strip) with an Ohm meter it should read fairly low. It is nothing but a long wire to an ohm meter. If it reads high or open it is bad.

Thanks hidef. So I can test the rectifier with it off the motor? I will have to figure out how to use that setting on my multi-meter. The old rectifier looks super old and I don't know it's history so it would not at all surprise me to find that it is defective.

Yes you can or you just disconnect the wires and test with your multi-meter on the ohms setting.
