1995 45 HP Mariner Outboard- good motor?

Considering buying a boat used with this motor. Is this owned by Mercury? Good motors at 45 hp? How fast can they push a 14 speedboat? Reliable motor? Is it 2 cycle and 50 to 1 ratio? ANY motor info would be great!

I attached a picture. It says it's 'oil injected' does that help with the year? Also, what does oil injected mean? Still uses 2 cycle but pour it and the motor mixes it without us worrying about mixing it? Never had an outboard oil injected...

He says it's possible the first two letters could be OG341585, BUT looks more like OB.

Is it possible that it just had 45 stickers on it and it's actually the 1988 35 h.p. Mercury and not a Mariner? Something doesn't make sense if the OB341585 is not even a Mariner 45 hp. I'm lost.

Here's a couple more photos of the engine. This is odd... 45 horsepower labeled all over it, seller thought a 1995, but this is coming up a 1988 35 horsepower motor? So confusing...

Well, if it was my deal, it would be up to the seller to prove what it is. And if he can't do that with title paperwork or pictures of the s/n [late, the engine would be staying with hi. After all, there is quite a difference between 1988 and 1995 and 35/45 hp.

Well it seems there are some questions as to what you really have. BUT, any OB engine that is running without any problems is a "Good Engine" in my book... Good luck finding out what you truly have...

Yep, I'm definitely asking some questions and my offer will depend on what motor it is.

Quick question, he indicates he's just had to add gas as it's oil injected and he thought 4 cylinder. Does that mean he has an oil tank within the engine that probably gets filled once a year when he winterizes it? The boat couldn't be out of oil and run so well, I was confused when he said he just adds gas to the onboard tank.

If the decals are original, I can tell you that it's not a 95. I have a 96 40HP and I researched Mariners decals into the ground because something seemed shady to me as well. turns out my motor was some kind of end-run which caused some confusion. 88 sounds more accurate to me but I'd get pictures of the s/n and you may be able to enhance them digitally to see better.

FWIW mine's a mariner made by yamaha, and I can't say anything but good things about that motor!

Oil injection does mean a secondary tank, though I'm honestly not sure where it'd be on an O/B. You'd have to add oil frequently, not once a yeah. It simply auto-mixes it for you, to simplify the process.

That looks like an 80's era motor, I just fixed a cowl off a 94' 50HP Merc and it was nothing like that.

Photo is far too small, do you have a link to the site?

Then again craigslist could publish a photo of a pink elephant and tell you it was a red rose.
