Re: 1995 Evinrude 70 Rebuild Project

Yon cannot buy the locating pins but I have several used ones salvaged from old engines if you need one. This pin is extremely hard and the way I remove a broken one is to lay a small nut on it and silver solder pin to it, couple of twists and its out, the salvaged ones where cut out of block.

Can't be bought eh? Just my luck. Are the ones you have compatible with my block?

Whats the wear tolerance on these pins? Would I be crazy to try and have the existing pin repaired in place?

Just grasping at straws here...

These are harden pins and doubt it could be repaired still in block. These pins have a tight clearance but its not listed in any manual that I know of, take a bearing race(empty) and set over pin and measure and compair to others in block. The pins I have should fit but just scraped a 75 last week, will cut one out and compare it to others I have.

Re: 1995 Evinrude 70 Rebuild Project

Just heard back from the machine shop. Good news is the head is only 20 out and can be machined easily. The bad news is that #1 cylinder is alread .020 out and will need to go to .040 to have any chance of being usuable.

I told him to go ahead and try to fix #1 first and if it works then I will have .040 for #1 and .030 for #2,#3.

As for the pins, he said that it looks fine and that personally he would use them as is. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

So for now, if all goes well I will have my rebored block, re-machined head and a set of wiseco pistons waiting for me on wednesday!

If #1 can't be fixed then I'll have about 40lbs of scrap metal waiting for me...wish me luck!

Re: 1995 Evinrude 70 Rebuild Project

Well, I got my block and head back today; freshly bored to .030 on #3 and .040 on #1 & #2. Looks like they did an excellent job.

The cylinder head has been resurfaced and looks great. I picked up a set of Wiseco pistons, rings and wrist pins from the machine shop.

As for the locating pin, they said it was fine and on second inspection by myself it seems like no big deal. It is still the same outer diameter when measured with a micrometer and only the top is slightly worn in the center. I will be sure to check closely when I'm installing the center mains to ensure that it has fit correctly.

Still shopping around for a crank and as soon as I have one I will post back with pics/update on the rebuild.

Cheers!

Hey James, thanks for the offer but all I really need now is a crank. The crank for mine is different than yours. I need one from 93-95 model years.

Cheers

Next step was to salvage the connecting rods from the old pistons.

Connecting rods off old pistons, time to fit the new needle bearings.

Using ample needle bearing assembly grease the new bearings set easily into the connecting rod.

Slide wrist pin into the new piston and rod, thrust washers flat side facing out from connecting rod.

Re: 1995 Evinrude 70 Rebuild Project

Install the flywheel key and place the flywheel on to rotate the crankshaft and test for any binding.

After this I cleaned the carbs and reinstalled them with new gaskets. I then sent the powerhead off to my mechanic to have the ignition and fuel systems installed professionally. I wanted them to do a nice job of routing all the fuel lines and wiring complete with proper clamps and ties.

While the powerhead is being finished off I will be servicing the lower leg, new water pump kit and gear oil. Pics of that soon to come.

I may even attempt to transfer the power trim and tilt assembly from my 2000 Evinrude 70hp to this one. The one I'm rebuilding here is manual tilt and I would prefer power if at all possible.

Just a question Trendsetter, you used a new crank and pistons, noticed you are reusing the old rods, did you get the machine shop to magnaflux them to check for issues?

Just curious.

PS- Good job bro

Hey bktheking, that's a good point but no I didn't. I did however have my mechanic look them over and I checked them on a flat surface with a feeler gauge to make sure they were still within tolerence as per the service manual.

Since the engine didn't seize when it failed and they spec'd out ok I decided to use them. It's a little late now as the engine is already back together so I hope that wasn't a critical step I missed!

I just hope they are good, wouldn't want a rod to let go on all the nice pretty new bits in there. :)

Yeah that's for sure. I'm pretty confident but now only time will tell.

BTW I went with a reman'd crank as you had suggested earlier, I got a good deal trading my old crank in as a core. Can't wait to hear this sucker fire up for the first time. I'm hoping to start the break in process next weekend.

Cool, always cheaper than new. Remember to use more oil , I posted on another post break in instructions , not over certain rpm, varied rpm, more oil, all that jazz but I'm sure you're on top of it.

Yep for sure. I am disabling the VRO so I will be running 25:1 for the first two tanks and will follow the factory service manual steps..I'll probably be even MORE careful with this one as I want it to last me.

I love working on motors but I love boating/fishing even more so.:D
