1995 Johnson 200 OceanRunner wont start!!

Hey...my engine wont start, the starter runs but the little thing that turns the fly wheel on the starter won't go up to catch the fly wheel, so the fly wheel won't rotate, and it wont start. I replaced the solenoid and it does the same thing, still no magnetism at all lifting the "fly-wheel turning thing" up to the fly wheel. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Cap'n,

ONE of the very simple things that is often overooked is as follows. If the battery terminals are not clean and tight, the motor will spin but not engage. Key words, clean and tight.

Absolutely correct..Not having terminals clean and clean and tight and tight and having battery charged and charged will often times result in that small gear on the top of the starter only going up towards the flywheel half way which will round off the teeth on the flywheel and result in your plunking out anywhere between $200 and $400 if you are lucky for a new flywheel..Previous owner of my 115hp was guilty of that and I just had to replace the small gear and the flywheel.
BTY
I would closely inspect the teeth condition on your flywheel and the small gear on the top of the starter and you might take a look at the spring under the small gear on the starter.

Frank in Texas

FYI - The thingy is called the bendix gear. Make sure that the starter shaft, which the bendix rides on, is clean & spray with WD40. You should be able to turn it easily by hand.

If the "bendix" is free where you can turn it one way or the other and it will ride up the shaft into the flywheel, then you may have starter or weak voltage problems.

Hook up an accurate voltmeter to the starter positive post and the negative lead to the starter frame, and have someone turn the key to the start position. IF the voltage is below 10 volts, then you have a battery, connection, or cable problem. If the voltage is 11-or 12, then the starter is at fault.

Re: 1995 Johnson 200 OceanRunner wont start!!

Thanks guys, but now I have a new problem. The solenoid is clicking, but the starter isn't turning anymore. I connected my voltmeter to the positive on the starter and the ground and it showed nothing when starting, power isn't getting to the starter. I replaced the solenoid again and still no power to the starter. Anymore suggestions? Thanks

put the positive meter lead on the solenoid terminal from the battery. It should show about 12 volts. Then put it on the other terminal that goes to the starter, turn the key to start, the solenoid should click and show voltage. If it then shows about 12 volts, then you may have a bad piece of cable between the starter and the solenoid.

Check Battery cable from the battery to selonoid. If you are getting 0 volts at the selonoid terminal where the battery cable runs to it, then the battery is dead or the battery cable is shot. Put voltmeter across the battery and see what it reads.

Rick - I am getting 12.5 volts at the power terminal on the solenoid, but 0 volts from the terminal that goes to the starter.

Jump across the battery terminal to the starter terminal and see if the starter turns(2 big terminals) Use jumper cables if you have them. Let us know.

Let me say this a different way. Have someone turn the key as if to start the motor. Read voltage on the large terminal going to the starter. anything? If yes, replace the cable going from the selonoid to the starter. No, replace the selonoid again. Where are you getting the selonoids? Is selonoid wired correctly?

yea thats what i've been doing no voltage at all.......replaced the solenoid again, still no voltage this is kinda crazy....im getting them from Boat US they're Cole Hersee 12V continuous duty solenoids.....maybe i need a different solenoid? I'm pretty sure thats the right one thoough, sounds right and looks identical...am I using the right one?

Re: 1995 Johnson 200 OceanRunner wont start!!

The problem is you don't want a continuous duty selonoid. You want a starter selonoid. continuous duty is for something like TNT units. Thats why you are burning them up as fast as you install them. I would go to the dealer and get one or get one off one of the sites below. should cure you're problem pronto.

web Page #586180

This will do it

Do you have the part number off the original selonoid?? That would help.

Hey guys I'm back...I put the new solenoid that they gave me in and it tested fine on my multimeter. I then tried to jump the starter and it was dead! So now I need a new starter....ooo boy

Jon

Sometimes one thing leads to another! :) Hope this is the end of your problems. How did you figure out the starter is bad? Good Luck and let us know how it works out!
