Hi All!!!
saw this sight and looked like some good info going back and fourth.
in the future I will try to help as well.:D

So on Monday out for about an hour in the bay and I could not get the boat to go over 1200 rpms after running well.
Received some advice so I went to WestMarine and purchased the de-carb they sell. Prior to this I did a compression ans spark test, all cylinders between 114-117 on compression and spark on cylinders was strong.
So did the de-carb per the instructions, went to go start it after running the de-carb thru at 1500 rpm's,,nada,,waited still nothing,,,then I checked for spark on all plugs, checked them individually,,nothing. This was yesterday,,,so this morning I figured one last try and it fired right up and I had it running for 20 minutes at different rpm's,,,whats the deal here???

any suggestions???
thanks,
Lance

Welcome
First, is it a 1995, or is it a 2.0? In 95, 150's were either a 2.4 or a 2.5

Carb or EFI?

Has it been sitting? Is your fuel clean and water free?

I don't have any idea what's under that early 80's clamshell, but the serial number comes up 2.5 L XR6/MagII, which would be mid 90's.

There is a welsch plug on top of the block behind the flywheel. What, if any number is on that plug?

since it is a v-6 would'nt it be xr-6/magIII??
just took the carbs apart, they were clean,,wiped them down anyway and ran it,,fired right up and ran fine,,now it is acting like it has no spark again,,can the stator if failing act intermitently???

Lance, That motor has a high speed and a low speed stator winding. it sounds like you need to ohm out the stator windings. There should be a test for that on the CDI Electronics website.

What size is the prop hub. XR6 had a 4 1/4 inch lower. Standard is 4 3/4 in.

Part numbers on the carbs are a big clue. The welch plug is a clue.

Unless, of course, the whole engine is a kluge from the scrap heap like we are beginning to suspect.

Not meant to be a disparaging remark. Some of the quickest V6 mercs I know of are basically junk heap build ups. Some turn almost 10,000 rpm.

hope it helps

went to fire it open as soon a sI turned the batteies on the starter went on with out turning the key,,I thru up in my mouth twice and called my marine tech,,it goes in Monday morning.
I will be going out on my buddies boat this weekend,,worry free

being the thick headed austrian that I am, I disconeected the solenoid, cleaned the connections re connected turned the batteries on nothing, then turnied the key and it fired right up,,then idled up to 2K on it's own,,can't get the idle down below1100rpms

it does sound like a ferrari when you rev it up

thanks for all the help and advice,,I will let you know the final diagnosis on Tuesday or when he has gone thru it,,maybe it will help others

Ferrari???, Sounds like it was out of the water. I sure hope you had water supply hooked up to it. Otherwise, plan on a water pump impeller and probably housing. (don't ask me how I know)

Out of the water, without any back pressure from the lake, it'll tend to idle a little high till it warms up. Idle speed adjustment is pretty easy anyway.

Get a maintainance manual. They're really fun and relatively easy to work on.

hope it helps
