OK so I have a 1996 4 stroke evinrude 15hp. The motor will run without the fuel line hooked up with the gas in the bowl but floods out bad with the line hooked up.

--with the gas line attached and the carb together when you crank the motor it will not start and gas come out of the air cleaner
--the float and needle is not stuck I took the carb apart about 5 times
--if the float bowl is off and I hold the float up no gas comes into the bowl when cranking the motor
--if the float is down gas pours everywhere when cranking the motor
--the motor will run with the float bowl off and the float down with gas going everywhere
--the motor will run on starting fluid sprayed into the air cleaner
--if i get the motor running and plug the gas line in the motor floods out and dies

This is driving me nuts because all of the reasons a motor usually floods is not happening here IE float stuck, needle stuck, etc.

ideas anyone? anyone in long beach wanna come take a look Ill be happy to pay...Thanks in advance!

trayshcool,
Pump the bulb and see if it ever gets hard (signaling the float has risen and the float valve has shut off fuel. If not, then much as I hate to say, either your float needle and seat is bad, OR your float is leaking and gaslogged, wedging on the side of the bowl, mounted upside down, or adjusted incorrectly. I believe one of these is the problem. If even a TINY bit of grit is in that needle and seat, it won't shut off fully with the float pushing up on it. Check to see if you mounted the float upside down (I've done it before, myself!)
Good luck with it,
JBJ

Thanks for the reply!

The bulb gets hard meaning that the float is good.

I pulled this motor off of my other boat running perfect and mounted it on another boat less than a week later and this is whats happening. I didnt rebuld anything just take the float bowl off......

Someone said it cold be the fuel pump or fuel regulator? does this motor have an electric regulator????

EDIT: OK this part here is getting very hot when i was trying to start the motor, its the electric primer solenoid.

can this be flooding the motor????

I couldn't see your part but I believe the electric primer solenoid could most definitely be flooding your motor. Is there a little red lever on that thing? If so, it cold be in the wrong position. I'm sorry, I'm unfamiliar with electric primer solenoids but I have noticed that quite a few folks have asked this question in the past. I'd better let somenone take over here that knows more about your motor.
SOrry I can't be more help,

Sounds like the primer solenoid is stuck on, is it actuated by pushing in the key?

see if you hear it click when actuated, my guess is its not turning off so look at the switch. If its part of the ignition ket, see if the bezel is twisted, sometimes the wires will short out if the bezel is loose and turns when turning the key. Its gotta be something simple like that, a short or chafed wire.

Thanks!

Even if I unplug the solenoid from any power it still dumps the fuel.

Im thinking that the diapram inside of the solenoid is busted meaning that it is dumping fuel into the top of the carb. Im going to try and unplug it from th carb today and see if I can get it to run. if that is the case than Ill just use the motor without it since the part is $200 and I NEVER choke the motor when starting it always fires right up.

It might be manually turned on, dumping fuel like a hose into the manifold.
Try turning the red lever 90 degs to shut it off , then fix the wiring.

If the primer solenoid is fried, take a look at item #350098691564 on eBay ... if that's your part, it's only $60!

yea but even if I unplug it from the harness meaning that there is no pwoer it dumps fuel I am thinking because the diaphram is shot.

Does anyone have the wiring diagram for the back of the key switch? there are 6 colored wires that plug into the back of the key switch that may be wired wrong...

Thanks again everyone for the help!!!!!

Just a suggestion but if you disconnect the primer system, plug up a small length of primer tubing and attach it to the carb so that it doesn't pull air in through the primer nipple.

I am going to try that first thing today when i get home thanks!

Ill post the results later tonight.

I need the wiring on the back of the key switch because I am pretty sure I fried the primer unit so I wanna make sure that I have it wired right this time....

Thanks!!!!

John,

I actually have that same diagram printed out and sitting on my desk but it is the wrong one. Mine has pins with 5 around the outside and 1 in the middle.

Thanks!!

OK so I removed the primer solenoid and the thing runs perfect. Probably going to just use the motor as is with no solenoid will this be OK?

pics for the curious, her name is LOBSTER KILLER 2 haha
