I have replaced the following and it will only run or start with the choke out 3/4 and it runs poorly even then and often dies. This is a kicker motor and runs on the same gas supply through a filter seperator and the big motor runs great. With much help from you guys.
Compression is 90 89
I pulled the exhaust cover and the ring and pistons look great.
New carb kit and cleaned three times
New fuel pump kit checked flow at output ok
New hoses and hose fittings
Did link and sync
I installed a new head gasket
I installed a new thermostat
New spark plugs NGK BP5HS which is what it came with when it was new.
Pumping the primer bulb does not help

I have the factory manual but no ideas.
I am down to the wire on this as I am leaving on a fishing trip in a week and have to have this working.

Any ideas would be very helpful THANKS.
Sherm

you have an air leak. its running too lean, hence it will only run with the engine choked.

check all your gaskets and seals around the carb. check reeds valves too.

Re: 1996 6hp runs on with 3/4 choke

I found what I thought was the problem. One of the carb studs was not down far enough. I think the nut was bottoming out on the uncut portion of the stud which made the gasket not seal.

Now I can get it to idle fair but when I give it any throttle it dies. This is with the idle adj. screw out three full turns as per the book. If I change this even the slightest it starts to pop and run poorly.

Maybe I should be looking at ignition or something else I am really lost on this one.

Thanks

are you running this under a load( on a bot in the water) or just on the muffs at home( out of the water)

Right now I am running it on muffs but last week I was running it in a trash can. This morning I think I will pull the flywheel and just take a look. I also think I should figure out wheather it's firing at the right time. I did do the spark test and it jumps 1/2 inch with no problem.
Thanks so much for the help.
Sherm

if your 96 is anything like my 89, you cant do anything to the spark timing excepte mix up the plug wires.

with the way its "bogging" when you give it throttle, it sounds like it is too rich.

turn your mixture screws back in again, and slowly, turn outwards 1/4 turn ata time untill its starts to sound good.

I just spent another hour turning the idle screw in and out slowly but if it will idle as soon as I give it throttle it dies. If I adjust the screw to where it will run at high rpms then when I back the throttle off it dies. Perplexed, confussed and dumbfounded.

I did pull the flywheel just to take a look to make sure I didn't have a sheared key or the like but it looks perfect.

Thinking of ordering another carb kit and starting over as I have gone down this road too far already. Or pulling the reed plate although I can see them fair through the carb hole.

Sherm
