I have a 96 7.4l gen v that died on me. I narrowed the problem down to the fuel pump. Which is the type that is mounted to the top of the raw water pump. When I removed the fuel pump to replace it, the inside of the raw water pump where the fuel pump arm rides the cam was bone dry and there was some sludge in there that looks to have been there a while. The cam or whatever is in there spun freely on the shaft with my finger and I was also able to move it left to right. When i cranked the engine, it did also spin with the shaft but I'm not sticking My finger in there to see if it is just spinning loosly on the shaft. My question, is this normal for it to spin without the shaft spinning or is that a sure sign that the pump is bad and maybe even the cause of the fuel pump not pumping fuel? Thanks for any insight.

I get that the electric fuel pump is the best way to go, but I've already bought the pump. My real concern now is the raw water pump. I feel like it is bad as well.

I had that same issue on the port side engine a few months back. I put some oil in the cavity where the cam is and put the new fuel pump on. It is essentially a cam shaft and a ring, so the part that spins is the ring.

Bt Doctur also told me to put an electric pump on it, but I did not. :)

Best to check the oil level on the pump every year or so. There is a plug on the side of the pump that un-screws to check the level.

Agree this is normal and should have gear lube in there. This is a maintenance area and should be checked for lube. Since yours was day I would rebuild the pump. Its easy enough to rebuild and doesn't cost that much.

Between this Youtube video and this rebuild kit on ebay, I rebuilt my Gen V 7.4 water pump last September. Been doing great. I did NOT replace the shaft as mine was in good shape. If yours was dry when inspected, I would be less hopeful. Best of luck!

Yeah. You can actually rebuild the raw water pump drive pretty easily and replace the pump with an AIRTEX 60932 pump

http://airtexproducts.com/single-product/?partnumber=60932&id=98756AX

Airtex is/was the OEM for Mercruiser. I got mine from a local autoparts seller who looked it up in their "Marine" catalog. 10 years ago, it was about $50........the price has gone up however......It's now about $60-70

You should check that little oil reservoir probably yearly to make sure it has a little gear lubricant inside.

Also, if it (the oil) smells like gasoline, the pump is likely leaking into the reservoir and is slowly diluting the oil. Time to replace that $60 pump.
