I'm going to be looking at a 1996 Hurricane deckboat with what I assume is the original 175hp Intruder. I have not seen the boat in person yet. It is a very clean boat, and the pictures of the motor...it looks new!
I don't know too much about newer (1996 is newer to me) outboards, and this would be the highest HP motor I've had yet. Is there anything in particular to be aware of when I look at this one?

that's a good motor...really puts out about 190 hp ...its the high performance edition for that year in 175 hp. really you need to just make sure it is in good shape.... compression check all cylinders. maintenance records... and then check protruding gaskets and removed and replaced bolts to see if they correlate to the service admitted. if anything those motors do burn through Regulator-Rectifiers.....the over temp alarms goes off at 240 degrees.... and it triggers SLOW...a function that limits the rpm of the motor....but I personally think letting a motor get to 240 degrees is bad..... I would not want my motor to reach 200 degrees!!!...so I install a temperature sender, AND GUAGE to monitor each head.......so if I see the temps climbing to 200..... I can just shut the motor off, and avoid damage....

usually what ever causes damage does it VIA over heating.....

I have a 1997 Johnson fast Strike 175....its the same motor with a Johnson badge instead of an Evinrude badge

You want to have the motor checked out by a quality knowledgeable mechanic. Some of those v6 blocks have a casting flaws.

OK, I will check that one out when he gets back from hunting.

An interesting ad come up today...a 1998 Harris Flote Bote I/O with a 4.3 Volvo Penta 4.3 GS. Looks like it is in decent shape, and VERY inexpensive. For what they are asking, I almost want to assume the engine is shot. They claim it runs well. Any info on that motor? Honestly, it is so cheap I could afford ALOT of work on it before I feel like I'd get hurt. Hmm...

Some of those require pulling the exhaust manifold to replace a starter. Also check for fatigue in the "M" brackets.

If it leaks from into the engine pod make sure it's just bellows and not the "y" pipe gasket, another engine pull job. It's actually really easy to pull those though. If you know what your doing its about 45 min.

More likely the interior is shot as people hate putting the cover on. The sun ages boats in dog years.

It's a deckboat, not a pontoon. It's a Harris Kayot. Sorry I said Float Bote.
And the interior, at least in the pictures, looks pretty good! The seats look fine, and I think it has snap in carpet.
Hoping to see it today.

Kayo is okay asnlong as you wear a mouthpiece in rough water. Rough ride.

image1.jpeg image2.jpg image3.jpg image4.jpeg image5.jpg image6.jpg I bought it! Turns out my cousin is really good friends with the owner of the marina. The boat was on consignment, purchased new from them and maintained by them since new. The original owner bought a pontoon and was selling this on consignment. He looked up the book value and had it listed at that $9000 with no bites. Not a great time of year to try to sell. He called them and said he wanted it gone this week. The marina told him to list it at $6000 and take $5000. The owner said to list it at three and take the first buyer at that price. That would be me. With the entire service records I felt a lot better. While I didn't take it on the water, the marina owner had and said it ran great and topped out over 40 mph. The bellows look good, and the boat overall is in really good shape. There's really no deck rash, just a couple of small scratches. The big thing is that the top side gel coat is oxidized. I wet sanded a little spot when I got home and it shined right up!
It has snap in carpet in good shape, a good bimini, but will need a new storage cover. Two of the seat bottoms will need to be fixed/restitched. All of the equipment works, and it has a sink and a head. I will be taking the head out...
They ran it on a hose for me, and it runs really nicely. Really easy to get to the engine too.
They winterized it for me for free while we waited!
For $3000, I think I stole it.
