Problem started with water in fuel, naturally motor died. Drained built in tank, installed water separator, motor idled great, planed out but died at 4000 rpm. By passed new water separater, motor still died at 4000 rpm. Removed check valve in tank, no change in performance. Hooked up motor to portable 5 gallon tank, motor ran perfect for over an hour. I stopped and restarted several times without problems. Hooked it back up to built in tank, problems returned and it dies at 4000 rpm shortly after getting on plane. My considerations: Replace aged fuel line, possible clogged vent line, possible weak fuel pump that works with short line on portable tank but not on longer line to built in tank. Any other suggestions. Motor is mounted on 17' Bonita, fuel tank mounted in bow.

That's a long way to pump fuel.

I think you have tank and line issues. You answered that by running on the portable tank.

Did it run ok before the water issue? Maybe a weak fuel pump, that is a long way to suck fuel.

Re: 1996 Johnson 115 fuel deliver problem

I am running dual tanks that are bow mounted, up to a valve under the console, then a single line back to a fuel seperator and then into the motor. I am guessing about 20 ft of line total. I have some issues until i get a solid column of fuel flowing( motor starves out about 6-7 times and i have to pump the bulb in the first 5 minutes).. then i dont have any issues. I have been running this set up for two years now. But i have issues in the wakes zones, at low rpms...

I am guessing the pump is having a difficult time pulling enough fuel to make a solid column, but once all the lines are full of gas, it acts like a syphon effect and the fuel flows much easier.

if you always have issues at higher rpms only... id think it is something different than a fuel pump, maybe a restriction, or a vent line.

how did you hook up a seperate tank?? those motors dont have quick disconects( i have a 1995, a 1996 and a 1997!!)

Re: 1996 Johnson 115 fuel deliver problem

Finally got the time to work on this one today. Replace fuel line from tank to motor. Used air compressor to blow back into outlet valve from tank as well as vent tubing. Put it in the water, spit and sputtered for a couple of minutes then ran great for the next hour. Ran it through a series of RPM changes, both gradual and drastic, no apparent problems. Hopefully this problem is solved.
