well now its starting to get frustrating.. been having an on going problem with this thing...runs well at first but after it warms up and after running for an hour or so it dies when i give it gas and can barely keep it running... it is fine in neutral and only does this while under load.... started thinking it was a fuel restriction problem. i have replaced all fuel lines and filters with new alcohol resistant lines. that didnt work. i tried disabling vro system and using premix. that didnt work. i bought a brand new vro(fuel) pump. that didnt work....where shall i go from here? im guessing a carb overhaul??? any suggestions is much appreciated

it wont even get going. as soon as i put it in gear it wants to die. i can barely keep it running around 1200rpm. also when it is in neutral it like surges above idle a bit. its like not getting the proper amount of fuel. plugs are wet and black. which i replaced the plugs also

When starting QS advances timing, when its warm QS drops out and timing is normal. maybe timing is out, (disable QS when you time it) - just a thought.

Did you check the spark, while engine is at operating temps? How much fuel pressure at idle, should have 3 lbs, with guage T into line.

I believe you have an electrical issue. Based on the fact that it runs fine for an hour and then starts to act up. The wet plugs tell me you getting fuel into the cylinders but you are not burning the fuel. I think your carbs are fine and I don't believe you have a fuel restriction issue. If the carbs haven't been cleaned it wouldn't be a bad idea to clean them but it is not critical.

Have you checked the spark with a spark tester? All cylinders should jump 7/16 gap bright blue spark with a good snap that is what you are looking for. You want to check the spark when the engine is cold and when it is hot. You can also check for spark using an inductive timing light. Check each cylinder for spark after it gets hot. Have you also checked the compression? Do the cheap things first before dumping parts into it. If you don't have a healthy spark follow the CDI troubleshooting guide for your engine. I also recommend you purchase the OMC/BRP service manual for your outboard. It will save you hours of frustration and money in the long run.

no i have not done a spark test whit at operating temp. but operating temp would probably be way before an hour of running it. it works fine for the first hour or 2.. could it be a bad coil? how would i know if it was a coil?

Connect your peakread meter to the primary side of coil. Meter should have lead long enough to reach dash, run boat until engine acts up, check voltage. Should be 130/150 same all cylinders. If the voltage is jumping back and forth. Power pack, timer, charge coil, power coil. Time for manual.

I'd get a small portable tank, hose & primer bulb to try on it.
A cheap way to eliminate every possible problem before the motor.

Just a thought. I had an issue similar to this with my 75hp Mercury. On the original engine the cover for the fuel line that covers the screen was made out of plastic. :( It warped and when the engine was hot it allowed air to mix with fuel, which would cause the engine to sputter/stall. The retro fit cover is cast aluminum. No more problem!!! :)

You photos did not post. Have you followed the steps in the CDI trouble shooting guide? Did you get a spark tester and test the spark on all cylinders? Have you checked the compression? Your initial description does not point to a fuel or carb issue. Your engine as you stated runs fine for an hour gets hot and then doesn't run. You need to follow the CDI guide and figure out which component is acting up when the engine gets hot.

do you think it is just overheating? dont know what the symptoms of overheating would be..also if i take the air silencer off and inspect the air intake for the carbs there is alot of oil all around the holes.....the wierd thing is that if i pump the bulb rock hard when its acting up it runs good and dies like its out of gas

test your fuel pump...also check all fuel connections and lines..best to get a whole new fuel line, connectors and bulb. also do what post #18 said
