Re: 1997 Lakesport 17' remodel

Okay, back to work.

I got the wires, control cables, steering cable, speedo pitot tube tube and the new fish finder cable run to the console position. I was staring at it for a little while and glancing at the bilge pump float switch, I realized I was short a conductor in my electrical conduit. DRAT! Oh, well. I just ran another conductor with the control cables.

I put flotation back in the deck. I cut the floor of the cockpit for the console wires and cables, drain, and access to service the cockpit seat pedestals. The cockpit floor was covered,

The cockpit sides were lined up and riveted to the ribs along the gunnel, and the floor set in place.

Keeping at it, I welded the angle tabs onto the console pedestal for mounting. I welded in an intermediate bit to mount my negative bus and secure cables and miscellany.

I then got the console onto the deck, and fed the steering cable into the helm. I'll tell you, I don't have 6" to spare on the 18' cable, control cables also.

I was concerned about the stability of the console when secured to the deck, but I'll tell ya', after I only got two fasteners in, the thing was stout. I applied (7) 1/4"-20 stainless steel hex screws, stainless split-ring lock washer under the screw head, stainless steel flat washer where one would fit, and stainless steel nylon locknuts. The console is stout, and solid as a rock. I'm loving it!!!!

Re: 1997 Lakesport 17' remodel

I just started looking online for some tubes to install in my forward bulkhead to insert the fish poles that will be stored for travel on the boat. rod holders will be applied to the side gunnels of the boat for the tips of the rods to be inserted through the bulkhead into the bow area of the craft.

For some reason I imagined these plastic tubes as something that existed on the planet, but I do not readily find what I am looking for. It would be somewhat of a thin plastic tube, perhaps with an expanded open in to lock into a sheet metal surface with the appropriate size hole to insert or mount the tube into.

In the old arrangement, the poles where just stuffed into open space and allowed to tangle or otherwise imalgumate, and tips or line could get damaged by abrasion or impact against aluminum or other material loose in the bow space.

Am I going to have to fabricate something?

Hey Fish, nice progress! I built my own rod holders like you have pictured. for the tubes, I used PVC and capped the end. Mine had to curve to fit inside the V hull, but I heated them slowly with a torch, bent them to the shape I needed, then dunked in bucket of cold water. It worked really well for me!

After looking at the chart again, looks like I need to protect the 18ga at 10A - not 15. The 18ga. is for deck lights, on one circuit - bilge pump on one circuit - aerator on one circuit - nav light on one circuit with the instrument lights - anchor light on one circuit - baitwell pump on one circuit.

Those are my 18ga circuits and should be fine at 10A.

BTW-you should use whatever size fuse the item is rated.....my bilge pump specifies a 5a fuse (and says no larger) regardless of wire size....just food for thought

Hey Mike! You know what I'm talking about.

How did you secure the pipe to the bulkhead? Maybe you need to post some more of your project and get to the fish pole piping for me, LOL! I'll try the pvc thing with my torch. I have golf bag tubes in an old bag of mine - but the diameter may be a little small. I hadn't checked the golf club tubes out directly, yet.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll check all my components for that information. I just got a new Lowrance. It came with an inline fuse holder and a 3A fuse. I'll install the factory fuse in the power supply to the fish finder - stepping down from a circuit with 10A protection.

I used 1-1/4" PVC, mine is epoxied where it goes through the bulkhead, and epoxied with thickened epoxy where it touches the inner hull....but for your project and metal working skills you could maybe get some aluminum tube and bend it, then weld to the bulkhead and spot weld to inner hull? just a thought

Good idea....secondary protection is always good

I didn't realize how much I have into those tempress slam hatches. They're like $100.0 each for small ones. I've like $1k in slam hatches on my boat, LOL!

I applied one of the existing slam hatches to my console, as such in need of another to accomodate the re-allocation but I'm possibly re-thinking that. I've got near $2k in parts and materials in this project, now. The slam hatch on the console pedestal is kinda imposing. I initially wanted some easy access to the pedestal for service and perhaps some storage for small articles - maybe a few tools, But I'm considering just an aluminum panel covered with the Nautalex for the pedestal access. I see some gray colored T4100 hatches, maybe the gray color would be less imposing.

I decided on my console graphics scheme - I just got back from my sign guy. It may be done this week.

Re: 1997 Lakesport 17' remodel

Got a few hours in on the boat today. I decided to mount the cockpit pedestals and construct and install the storage area/pedestal hider.

While I was in the hull, reeviting or something, a neighbor in the business park drove by and stopped. He asked, "What's that?". I said, "What?"....."That!!!!, did you build your own dam console?", staring at my console mounted in my boat. "yeah", I replied. He said, "Wow!, Cool".

It made me feel good. I guess my console is a bit of head turner?

Anyway, enough of the chit-chat.

I don't feel like I've been very instructional, like I've just been producing a results-oriented thread. So, I included some pics during some of the tin-knocking and decking procedures that I am engaging in.

The hide-away seat pedestal thing works GREAT! I', loving it.

I bent my single-piece pedestal hider/storage partition out of 14ga alyoumeeneeum. It's pretty dern stout! I bent some brackets and covered with Nautalex and riveted to the sides and a reevit through the top of enclosure. I was anticipating needing to put a couple of braces between the storage hatch and pedestal access hatches, but she's pretty firm. 'Got a little bounce in 'er, just enough to make it comfortable just sitting on the deck.

The aluminum I cut with a steel-cutting carbide tip circular saw blade. I use 18TPI jigsaw blade for fine work.

My sheet metal brake is rated 16ga mild steel. It's takes some humphhhh to bend even 14ga alyoumeeneeum, and some grunting to get a bend onthe 3/16" I'll bend (sometimes 2 guys to get it done, if I didn't eat my Wheaties).

thanks PMC. I started the thread on Oct 27th, and actually since that is the day I got the rail done and not even started any dis-assembly - I guess it is moving right along. I'm pretty much on it 24/7 - thinking about it. As far as thinking about it, I may have started a couple of weeks prior investigating materials and making drawings. So far, probably about 6 weeks into the job.

Cheers!

HF, the photo of your console on post #61 cracked me up. Looks like it yakked up wiring all over your nice deck:D

Your metal work looks great man!:)
