I'm continuing a thread I started in "Boat Topics and Questions (not engines)" for questions on which floor covering to use. I'm thinking of going with Nautolex but not 100% yet. I'll post some photos once I figure how to get them from my ideabook.

Still not sure how to create a photo album. But here are some before photos.

So I've never rebuilt a boat yet.. I have 2. One in use, and one I'm considering rebuilding. (It's retired at the moment due to being insecure about the hull/transom/stringers..)

I suppose this is more of a question than offering advice..
I understand you're just looking to replace the flooring (carpet, Nautolex etc...)

But, in your pics, the carpet looks wet, then there is a wet spot in the pic with carpet pulled up..
Also looks like a lot of black around the engine compartment..

Being a newbie, I'd be asking if I had rot in there, and if so, I'd expect it's in my stringers and transom too..
Do you know everything else is solid?
Is it a wrong assumption on my part based on the pics?

Just looking to learn a little..
Here's a pic I made of your pics outlining what I'm talking about..
Red circle is wet spot in both, and arrow points to black I'd think was rot/mold..
floor_question.jpg

Again, just looking to learn something, so if this is not an issue, then what is it, and why is it normal?

Thanks for indulging! :)

The PO had an engine failure due to the PO before him not winterizing it properly. At least that is what he told me. The engine failure spilled oil on the carpet, etc. I've had the boat for coming on 3 years and have not had any water issues. Although, since you pointed it out I will surely take a closer look at the dark spots. Thanks for pointing it out.

Ahh, Ok..
Well, I hope it's not a can of worms LOL

I just saw something that made me wonder is all..
Going to keep following along to see how it goes..
Looks good otherwise, and I was just curious..
I'm interested in what you do with the floor too, since I'm considering a rebuild, but mine would be from hull up.. haha!

Thanks for taking the time to respond! :D

Does anyone know how to get the side panels and these panels under the console? I took all the bolts off that I could see and they're still not coming off. In the first photo there were 4 threaded rods that went through that panel (wood covered with carpet), through the fiberglass and into the wood of the vinyl covered seat back of the bow seating. The seat back came off and the wood is actually rotted. But the carpet covered panels are not coming free.

On the side panel shown, I found 2 bolts with nuts that I removed but cannot tell for sure what else is holding these in place. It looks like there might be screws that screw through the fiberglass but are covered with insulating foam. I don't want to chip all that out if there is another option. I also included photos of the foam, etc. One of them shows a tube that must be for wires, etc if you choose to run them up that side.

The carpeted panels are attached with Phillips head screws. The screw heads will be buried into the carpet. You will have to feel around for them. Should be 4, each in the corner area.

On the side panels, try to pull or gently pry the blue panel off. It should be held on with panel push pins. Underneath the panel will be screws holding the main piece. If the blue panel won't budge, try the beige one, but normally it's the longest one hiding the screws. Also check for angle brackets attached to the side shelf. If you have located all of the thru bolts once those screws are removed the panel should come off.

Awesome! Thank you both. I have a tool for auto door panel removal. They're held on with similar plastic pins. I can't wait to give it a go!

The rain quit today (FINALLY!) so I was able to work on the floor a bit. Seems that some of the carpet adhesive is stubbornly entrenched in the uneven resin surface. Does all that have to come out before reapplying resin? Is there a solvent that I can use that is safe for the resin?

I also took the vinyl and foam off of the rotted wood backing that is the seat back to the bow seat. Good rainy day project.

As I worked on getting the carpet adhesive off of the floor I noticed some open spots in the resin where either it wasn't filled in or maybe an air bubble opened up, etc. So I think putting a coat of resin on top of my floor would be a good idea (Stingray has a plywood floor covered in some areas with fiberglass and the whole floor is resin coated). Anyone have a good recommendation on a brand of resin what quantity I could figure on using for an overcoat of a 19ft bow rider? I was looking on iBoats and that stuff ain't cheap so I don't want to over purchase.

I also still need to figure out how clean I need to get the floor before recoating with resin. There are some depression with adhesive that will not come out with sander or wire brush. I'm hoping there is a solvent that I can wipe the floor with to remove it if it needs to come up.

In rebuilding my seat back I'm looking for rust resistant staples for the foam and vinyl like SS or Monel alloy. Can't buy them local but I should be able to get them online. I didn't think of that until my wife asked if standard staples are good enough (I'm glad she thought of it!). I used SS screws on every other thing I had to fasten but never thought of the staples--duh!

Got to work a little bit on the boat tonight. Not too much excitement on the floor. Except that a wire wheel on a drill does a pretty nice job getting the carpet adhesive out of the depressions in the resin.

Also, I was able to remove one of the panels from under the console thanks to the help of Jerry200LX and mickyryan. There were two screws from the aft side (under the console) and a bracket inside the bow storage that had two screws that attached to the board. See photos below.

I'll try the side panel next time I get to work on it. My panels have a burgandy, not blue, panel but I think that's what I need to gently pry off.

Don't know why I said blue panel. You are right, I meant the burgundy one. Must have had my boat in mind.

Got most of the carpet up tonight along with both carpeted panels under the console. The othe bow seat back was ½ rotted. I’ll see how I do re-backing the other one and decide how to proceed on that one.

One question that came up tonight: should I remove the carpet under the bow storage. I don’t know how well I’ll be able to clean the adhesive in that area given the limited access. Any thoughts from someone who’s done something similar.

Sorry i I don’t have any picts tonight. It got too dark by the time I finished.

Jerry200LX, today I pulled off the side panels. I really had to put my trust in you to pry out the push pins. They were really hard to pull out. For a moment I started doubting they were pins and spent a bit of time, once again, looking for another way just to make sure. Well, after not finding another way I went for it and finally got them out. It makes it so much easier to get to the surface on the side and I would not have been able to replace the carpet in the side storage area without removing it. Thank you for the tip!

I'm hoping this weekend (tomorrow, 'cause Sunday we will get rain and I need to go to work) to be ready for resin. I have never worked with the stuff. I plan on spreading a coat over the floor to fill in some holes, etc. and make sure all is coated before I put down the vinyl. Can anyone give me some pointers on applying the resin and what to buy?

Oh yeah, I have adhesive to remove from the bow area that is gel coat. Any advice on how to remove adhesive from the gel coat without screwing up the gel coat?
