I have a motor I bought cheap, disassembled and the block is at the machine shop being inspected. Two holes have turned sleeves, and one was tore up pretty good. If this motor comes together (and not parted) I will look at the water jacket modification.

The Shop bored out the banged up sleeve for me. He says one spot behind the sleeve looked hit, and he went wider at 20 over I believe, but said its still there, didnt fully machine out.

Questions:

1) How wide on the outside diameter of a replacement sleeve is ok. I called LA Sleeve and they make 6 OD sizes of standard ID Sleeves.
2) Any issues going toward the max OD, with respect to whats behind that wall? (water Jacket etc...?)
3) IF there is still a slight wide spot/Dent on the bore wall before the sleeve is install, is that an issue?

I'm going to the shop this week to inspect. I will verify the size of this spot, but curious if the rest of the bore is machined ok for a new larger OD sleeve, is it ok to have a slightly less than perfect bore-wall?

I also need to verify this "spot" has no cracks in it before thinking about proceeding.

Thanks

These questions are for the sleeve manufacturer. They send a lot of money and time designing sleeves.

Ive talked with LA Sleeve already, and have their specs of the 6 sizes of OD oversized sleeves.

The question is more on the block and its capacity to go up to these sleeve OD sizes on the boring work, to smooth out the area i'm taking about...I'm not talking about the finish boring of the actual cylinder, but the block, that will accommodate a new standard Inside diameter Sleeve (but be oversized on the outside dimension).

Meaning how thin will that leave the block wall with concern of what might be behind the wall (jacket etc...)?? Is it commonly done at these sizes??

Seems i'm asking more about the Block and general machining type questions (with respect to what might be a small void left in the block wall BEHIND the new Sleeve inserted).

It depends on where damage is on block as anything toward the exhaust side get you near the water jacket internally. Post some pic's of damage as you can get away with some damage in certain places. If it was damage by a rod failure I highly recommend the block be pressure tested for leakage in that cylinder if damage is toward water jacket....

Thanks Fazt....Not sure, I got to go to mach shop to take a look, and will take a couple pics.

Will see if they are able to do some sort of pressure testing. When I disassembled it, It was a rod cap bolt that sheared of all things. The PO said he had it worked on- maybe left it untorqed. Rod didnt break but it did crumble the piston skirt, cylinder, port edges and turn the sleeve. Was really hoping to rework this motor...time will tell.

Thanks
