Hello,

I have a question about my model J90TSLECM johnson motor. I took the boat out for the first time and noticed that the voltage when from 12V at idle to near 16V at faster speeds. Any ideas on how to fix thing?!?! Thanks

It appears that your motor has an unregulated charging system consisting of a stator and recifier. The battery is supposed to act as a load, regulating it to some extent. Yours seems to be overcharging. Clean up all your electrical connections and keep an eye on the water level in the battery. Your charging system looks to be 6Amps at high revs. Your battery should be able to consume all the charging, as it is much less than 6 Amps at cruise.

There might be an issue with the water cooled rectifier / voltage regulator.----Top rear of the block , partially under the flywheel.

Do you see that part on your motor ?------Is it still the original powerhead ?-----Or the 88 HP model swapped in ?

Rectifiers do not limit current, at least your rectifier will not limit the 6A max charging rate. Therefore, I do not think a new one will help the issue. Of course, when installing it, you may inadvertently clean the connections, which can help.

If you really want to limit the current, and you can find a high amp Zener diode with a 13-14V limit, that could fix you up. Alternatively, someone may be able to recommend a voltage regulator, from a Harley or something...

The batteries are brand new and almost all the wiring has been redone and cleaned up. Do you have a link for this? Part #? How are these installed in the circuit? Thanks!

The ----J90TSLECM---Is shown in the parts book as having a water cooled rectifier / regulator part # 585195.-----But who knows what is installed now.

Here are a few pics of the motor. It looks to me like there is not a voltage regulator installed….

I thought the same thing but the serial numbers match on the block and the midsection. According to the parts diagram for this model it should have a voltage regulator. Can you tell from the picture that it is missing? or is there not a place to mount one? Is there another way to regulate the voltage?

If I remove this bracket can I install the regulator (part # 585195)??? Some of the regulators I’ve seen are water cooled and come with a gasket and others don’t have a gasket. Trying to find one that will work.

I installed the regulator and double checked my wiring and I am still getting a voltage spike to almost 16 V!!! Could the stator be bad? I’m running out of ideas here

What are you relying on for the 16V reading? Hook up a known accurate voltmeter. Do you have any electronics hooked up such as a fish finder that is turning off and displaying high voltage on the screen when this happens. Last time I had a similar problem the dash voltmeter wasn't accurate enough to show it but my fish finder told me. My fix was simple as it was a loose connection on the battery post.

haven't used my fish finder since all this. My stereo is the only other device but its turned off. I hooked a volt meter up to the battery and got the same reading as dash gauge. I know is possible the regulator i bough could be defective.... are there any other aftermarket regulators i could try? I saw earlier in the post about high amp Zener diode with a 13-14V limit. I am not familiar with these

I also notice on my bus bar wiring bracket on the motor that there is a jumper piece installed from 2 yellow/grey to 3 grey (check pictures below) but on the diagram cover it does not show one. Could this be my problem? Should I remove this? Also that’s old pic of wiring I have replaced all connectors and cleaned them upBABEDA6F-A282-47FE-9BEE-74B4F94B2102.jpeg55E1A8FA-183A-4CEB-929B-2BDFDBA202DB.jpeg
