1998 Mariner problem

My engine started acting up a few weeks back. I thought it was bad fuel from one of the gas stations from previous incidents. Anyway, that wasn't the case.
Beginning of the day, the engine runs really good for about 5 miles, then it starts hesitating really bad and just looses power and then I can't ever get it back on plane again. First thing I checked was spark. Top CDM wasn't giving any spark, easy fix, replace it, go back on the water, same thing. Check spark again, now the 2nd one wasn't firing and when I check the 3rd again, I noticed a cracked wire, so I replaced the other 2 CDMs. Thinking the problem was resolved, went back on the water and it runs sweet again, I'm smiling and sure enough it does that same thing again. This time at slow idle, it dies, and it's nearly impossible to get the engine started again. I tried the trick of spraying gas into the carb to see if it was fuel related and it didn't do anything. No idea where to go from here. Can it be a bad stator or powerpack? How can I check these?
Thanks

Re: 1998 Mariner problem

i just did these today, u will need a test harness, trust me on this one
1 is alone

2/3 are paired

there is no power pack, the cdm is a CDI in one

test the stator in ohms and volts to see if u get primary
u need a dva
more than 100V is what u want

test the triggers, u need the test harness
u can yest plugged in or unplugged
volts u will get from
.2-2v is what u want and around 1.25K

either stator or triggers or bad ground on triggers which is black

unplug E.S.S.(emergancy stop switch aka KILL switch) from the rev limiter BLACK/YELLOW wire

i can copy the test if u want e-mail me please

Re: 1998 Mariner problem

I got JUSTINTIME's test papers and one of them was to check for Stator resistance. It says to connect white/green to the positive meter lead and the green/white to the negative meter lead, in the R x 1 ohms scale it should read 380-430, well my meter read .690. I'm scratching my head cause I might not be doing ti right. I also checked both the the wires for continuity and there wasn't any. Just a note that I replaced all the CDMs so they should working properly.
Secondly, I wanted to check the trigger assembly for resistance but it's telling me to check yellow, red ,blue and purple wires when all I have is a brown, purple,. white and black wire, any ideas. If I replace the stator do I also have to replace the switchbox?

Re: 1998 Mariner problem

yo do not have a switch-box on CDM's
the CDM is the box in itself

TEST VOLTS
I'm not a fan of volts

brown and purple are the triggers

usually merc/mariner the yellow/yellow is the battery charge, the red is 12v out put

can u post pics, i can see if i can get a mariner wire diagram
