Time to do some basic troubleshooting. Compression? Spark to all cylinders? Timing advancing? Carburetor opening fully? Carb might have a gummed up power circuit. Is the choke open fully? Other things mentioned, Exhaust passages clear? What’s the gear ratio? It should be on the decal near the upper gear housing

The whole engine was gone over last year compression was like 140-150 on all cylinders thats what all the other boats i have owned where at so dont think thats the issue. it runs great carb rebuilt ect pre sure this is a prop issue because it got worse with the 15 pitch not sure why tho.. i can get the rpms up there fine it just doesn't go 17 pitch i was able to get it up took a lil work but once it got over the hump 25mph not sure of the ratio its currently in a slip in the water il have to check once its out.

The end verdict i reset timing was off a lil bit put a lil bigger diameter prop on it turns out my old 17 pitch was 14.5 diameter so i went up to a 15x17 and found out alternator was bad to. So now it gets up on plane better and can hit 25-30mph if i push it thats about my max speed good enough for now.. also maintains speed better use to get off plane to easy mt WOT is also only 4200-4500 but il take it for now i plan on throwing a 4 barrel on it when i get the $$$

Similar boat as you.. I just checked and I'm running a 14-1/2 x 19 right now aluminum prop and have a 14-1/2 x 21 SS prop also in the boat I've never used. We top out right now around 42 mph, give or take, when trimmed up.

IGNORE MY LAST POST SOMETHING STILL IS NOT RIGHT BACK TO SQUARE 1 yes the new prop did help but something is not right i see my modle boat gettin 35-40mph or so...

what one do you have? and does it have a 5.7 merc? going to make a new thread ether my outdrive is the wrong one or its still the prop i cant get past 15-20mph and thats with me full throttle 4100 rps that's all i can get outa it if i go up in pitch i would make it worse no?

J.ust a thought, but would a spun engine coupler do this? I had a spun prop once that would hold for lower speed but then spin at higher speed. I had to crawl home. Not sure if an engine coupler works on the same principle but if there is a rubber part in the coupler it could be spinning at higher rpms?

at least from what i know if it was the coupler i would smell burning and see some smoke wen rubber heats up.

I have heard of boats becoming water logged - saturated foam and what not. This adds a lot of weight so top speed and out of the hole response is greatly diminished.

You are probably right about the burning rubber smell...as zellerj suggested, a waterlogged mess under the floor was going to be my next suggestion.

Unless this 5.7 is really a 5.0 . If the gear ratio is for a 5.7 (1.50-1) the motor will not perform, period. You can get away with a 1.84 ratio.swinging a 17P prop
