did not spin, just searching for other alignment causes
I would take a look at All Dodges question(post #18) as the way you move the mounts is inverse to what you think. If you had more grease on the alignment witness marks say on the bottom, you actually want to move the mounts up to put the coupler down. Is it possibel you are moving the mounts the opposite fo the way you want to go?

I assume the transom was ok?

i removed the bellows and put the old shaft trough bearing, found gap starboard side and a little towards the top. tried moving frt of engine to port side but not enough adjustment, removed the lags a pushed engine over 1/2 inch and that shaft slid in easy. lifted engine found double holes for mount from where they were replaced. who ever did them just set the engine down and put them in a a angle, have epoxy drying. will finish it up on Friday. thanks for all the tips.

Do you have an alignment bar?

Best way to do alignment
Snug bolts in rear mounts.
Attach a lift on the thermostat housing and pick front of motor up barely off the front mounts
Adjust bottom nut so both nuts just touch the bottom of the mount.
Lower motor onto the mounts

Now adjust up or down with even amount of turns on the port and starboard nuts until alignment bar slides in and out with 2 fingers

wood is all good, 3M 4000 it is thanks.
1999 and wood is good? Amazing and a keeper!!!! I can speak from personal experience, that is not usually the case for older boats, and if you removed motor you may have dislodged back motor mount or components, as I did, and you will never get motor to align. Make sure components are not laying in bilge. Mine were! If not and I understand you correctly, you ran motor/OD w/o being perfectly aligned. You may have damaged something or former owner damaged parts. As others have implied or recommended, pull OD and carefully examine shaft, bearing, u-joints, etc. Examine gimbal bearing for smoothness. I assume that your OD's has grease fitting to grease gimbal? If you installed Gimbal incorrectly, eventually it will cause problems. Your coupler may be damaged or worn beyond specs, as well and causing slop and vibration. That will require pulling motor again and replacing coupler. Been there! Good luck!
