Hey guys I'm new to the boating world and am considering in buying a 1999 marada. I am not familiar with boats so I would like any info in regards to fixing the hull on this specific boat. The guy selling it says it's not a hard fix but I would not know. Basically my question is if this boat is easy to work on such as removing the floor if need be to fix the crack. Thanks.

Re: 1999 marada hull crack

2 of the pix are the same & upside down.......

It appears to be leaking brown stained water, so no, it's not going to be an easy fix

Where exactly are these cracks located on the hull?

Sorry about the pics I tried to flip the second one but it was the same, that's how my phone uploads them to the site.

Re: 1999 marada hull crack

The crack is basically in the middle of the boat and in the center of the hull

Uhmm, then that will NOT be an easy fix. To be done properly you will need to gain access to the hull from the inside and that probably means cutting access thru the deck etc. This could easily run 1-2K before you're done.

Thanks for the feedback guys. The estimate given of 1-2k for the repair is it worth it to sink into this boat I have never heard or seen this make.

I would run away from this one. This crack is probably just the beginning.

Re: 1999 marada hull crack

Here's one:
1992 Marada 1800MVB.. stringer, transom, deck restore

The good news is once you start tearing into it, maker & style aren't as important as many think. Fiberglass boats are generally built the same way: Some polyester resin & fiberglass cloth/mat covering some plywood for the deck, stringers & transom.

WoodOnGlass has a great graphic listed here:
"Fabricating Decks, Stringers, and Transoms"

Dig into other restoration threads, almost any fiberglass boat thread will suffice. Again, it doesn't HAVE to be a Marada boat to be a good reference.

Looking thru other threads, you will see how wrong the seller is about the actual ease of repairing this crack. Perhaps you could grind out the damage & re-glass it, but where is the water below decks & what sorts of damage has it done beyond the tell-tale sign of water leaking out of the crack.

I think there is a lot of work ahead. Does the Marada still have it's engine & outdrive? Do they operate correctly?

You could easily surpass the $2K mark even IF the driveline is in good operating order.

Look at the price of a new boat that compares to this one, the prices for a new boat are staggering. W/ a lot of work, a great deal of effort, a good amount of time and not a small amount of money, you can rehab this boat and have it last for decades. At a cost that is significantly lower then the price of a new boat.

But it's already a 15yr old boat, it will only get older. Once you've bought the Marada (hopefully w/ a great engine & outdrive) and spent $1K fixing her (at a minimum, I think $2K is more realistic), you'll still have an older boat that is only worth about what you've got in it. Basically your labor & time was free.

Can it look great? sure

Can it work right? absolutely

Will it give you years of service, if done correctly? yes

How tough is a boat rehab? loads of hard, nasty work

Is it going to cost you 10%+/- of the cost of a new boat? Yep, and the primary reason most of us are here.

I might take it for free, but that is about as much as I would pay.
All he has is a damaged boat hull.
Motor is shot outdrive may be junk also.
It looks like it was pretty neglected.
To many other boats for sale that are in better shape.

Re: 1999 marada hull crack

me personally having been stung on my current boat. i would run away and fast (just my opinion) now that the motor is shot you have to re-power it. a crack in the hull like woodonglass said could be difficult. i would read just whats involved in fiberglass repair and restoring look at cost of materials and cost of another motor. added all together there might be a significantly better boat out there that has your name on it. at 1200 without a motor i would think you wouldn't even be able to recover the cost of the boat.

but on the flip side if your willing to take on a project like that and have the funds and with the immense support of the iboat gurus you could rebuild it.

you have one advantage i didn't you asked the right questions before you bought the boat when i bought mine i didn't even know about iboats.

cheers and good luck in what ever venture you shall choose :joyous:

A 15 year old hull with a gnarly crack in the keel and no powertrain? For $1200? That does not sound like much of a deal to me.

Re: 1999 marada hull crack

$1,200 for what?? A rusted trailer, 3 wheels and tires, a trolling motor, Steering wheel and a busted hull that prolly has waterlogged foam and rotted stringers, bulkheads and transom that will take 200 hours of hard work and $2-3K of your money to get it on the water??? Unless it's the style of boat you've always wanted and you can't find another one like it anyplace else...I'd RUN!!!!!!

You seemed to be determined about this boat . . . Don't Buy It . . .

First of all, the boat is upside down . . . :)

Secondly, nothing easy about fixing a cracked hull

The fact that you have asked the question on the one of the best boating forums is a good thing. You have gotten the right answer.

Plenty of other boats for sale with less to worry about.

Im surprised at all the honest feedback I have gotten, from my experience on other forums (non boating related ) you get made fun of first before a valid response is given and usually the thread get sidetracked quick . I guess the boating scene is a tight group of people that like to help even newbies. Definitely a fan of the forum, thanks again for all the feedback.
