trying to get some tips on removing the large bolt that holds the tilt/trim unit. I need to swap it out. I've whacked the crap out of it using a hammer and 2x4. Sprayed WD40 all over. Heard of heating with a torch, where would I direct the flame. Thanks.

I don't know what motor you have ,
but if you get it to come out post how, as mine on my C40TLRX would not budge either and mine will have to come out eventually

I've read lately about a new product out now that you spray onto the bolt with something like Freon, that freezes it, causing it to shrink a bit and loosen corrosion deposits. Not sure the name of it but I'll bet NAPA, Advanced Auto or one of those might help you with it... Just an idea! Good Luck!:)

I just went to Google and the product is called; Loctite Freeze Release....just spray on something like freon to freeze the stuck bolt and causing it to come loose...Could be worth a try, and maybe safer and better than a heat torch! Good Luck!

Thanks. I looked at the demo. Only problem is it seems developed for removing the nut. My bolt won't travel through the bottom of the bracket. I may get the stuff and try freezing the bottom of the bracket. Don't know if it will just get tighter around the bolt if it expands. Thanks for the suggestion.

The feeze stuff might be worth a try before you start applying the heat gun or torch to it. I've heard you could heat an area and then spray it with something like PB Blaster, and as the piece cools down it would draw the release chemical into the stuck area....maybe? Good Luck!:)

I had luck with the torch/PB blaster method on by '88 Evinrude, I heated up the bottom of the bracket waving the torch flame back and forth real slow, then a good stream of pb blaster, let sit till cool, then repeat if necessary. PB is a better penetrating oil than wd for these applications it seems. Took me three times and the bolt finally broke loose. I cleaned the hole through the bracket with emory cloth and the bolt real well before reinstalling, coated it with antiseize too. If the motor is still mounted on the boat be careful with the heat, try to insulate the transom with some heavy plywood or remove from the boat...

Thanks for the info. I just mounted the engine and then decided to get a replacement tilt unit. I'll have to deal with it on the boat and watch out for the heat.

June 26th 2012 at 1535hrs the "effer" came out!!!! HEAT BABY..... I took off the anode at the bottom of the trim bracket so I could get heat to anything the bolt was touching. Directed the propane torch flame to everything. Resorted to using a sledge hammer to hit the bolt from both sides between heating and a little "PB lube". Careful to wipe off excess and have a fire extinguisher nearby!! The bolt began to move so I re-heated, re-lubed and got further. Once the bolt was even with the side bracket, I used a 6 X 1/2" lag bolt to knock the bolt through all the fittings. Didn't break anything and the bolt may just need the threads to be touched up. I'll clean everything up and put some anti-seize lube on it.

Good to hear.

Make sure the anti-seize you use does not contain copper.
Aluminum and copper are a problem

Nice! Taking a torch to something like that for the first time is always a little unnerving! I had to use one on a magnesium air cooled VW block once to get out some broken manifold studs, that was scary...have you ever seen magnesium burn?!?! No wonder so many of them caught fire and melted back in the day!
