hi, i have a bay liner 2.3 omc 4 cyl motor with cobra outdrive. I just bought boat after sitting in storage for 5 years and it immaculate inside and out. My question is should i replace the timing belt now? maybe its dried out from sitting in indoor storage but i cant tell it appears to be in good condition. I've gone thru the motor points, plugs ,condenser, cap & rotor, oil & filter etc. I don't want a problem down the road, If you advise to replace it do you have a part number for both timing and alternator belts? the boat is a 1989 capri bay liner thank you

You may have better luck asking the mods to move this to the OMC forum.

I don't believe the 2.3 Ford is an interference engine so no damage would result if it breaks unless it can suck water up the exhaust if the belt breaks..

Given the unknown age of it I would go ahead and replace the belt.

Here is a link tot he belt https://www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=OMC0912761

and NLA tensioner https://www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=OMC0984875&pass_title=0984875+:

Would double check those parts vs your serial number as I guestimated your engine year range

Timing belt is listed as available for about $50 in one marine place.----Automotive appears to show a chain for 1990 ????

your 2.3 pinto/ranger motor is a belt. available at nearly any auto parts store

there were some mazda 2.0 motors in the rangers in the 89 and 90 range that were powered by the Mazda motor that had a chain. however the ford 2.3 pinto motor has been a belt since the early 70's

timing belt is under $10

I would make sure the exhaust manifold is in good shape, that is NLA. make sure the impeller has been changed.

Missed the part about there being more than 1 version of the 2.3 motor.

so if belt breaks there will be no damage? no bent valves? just line up the diamonds and other line up symbols and put a new belt on and it should run?

In my limited search on the subject yes it looks like the ford 2.3 is a non interference engine. not having done a 2.3 belt yes would assume line up the timing marks on crank and cam… given how many 2.3 s ford made there should be a ton of info out there for you to search.
what was always worked for me after timing belt change is (with plugs out) turn engine by hand , nothing should bind up…

which gear oil do you recommend for an omc cobra outdrive?
You can use the Merc/Quicksilver High Performance Gear Lube. Just make sure to refill it the correct way, most of them take about 2 qts of gear oil.
