I have an 87 bayliner OMC cobra with the 3.0L in it. I bought the boat not running. The previous owner said that he quit using the boat because of a knock. Tore into it and right away found the coupler bolts finger tight. No crank problems or pistons. BUT blown HEAD gasket between 2 & 3. It shows old JB weld on riser side of block. No signs of ever having water in oil.
Is it possible to trade out for a automotive 2.5L?
Specific years???
Thanks

I guess at this point, I'm more concerned that I can bolt it up. The 2.5L which was in an 87 Fiero looks REAL close. I'm concerned about the mounts and flywheel and things like that. I'm willing to drop a little horsepower to beat trying to find a 3.0L

Also with my first posting, anyone used an engine with the crack like I described?

A lot of people use JB weld to seal minor cracks

If you had a 4.3 or a 5.0 or 5.7 its not a problem the 3.0 is a problem

tommays

The previous owner said that he had ran it with the JB in place. The inside of the engine doesn't show ANY signs of water inside ever. The outside doesn't show rust seepage. I just don't want to invest in an overhaul kit and have a leaking block.

It Looks as Close as an Apple Looks like an Orange.........

No Disrespect intended,........ But........

Reading your posts,... You Don't Have a Project Boat........You have a Pile of Parts........
A Few of them may be salvageable....... Most Aren't.......
You'd do Better to Sell what you can of what you Have,+ Start Over.......
Buy a Project with a Current model Driveline......Mercruisers are By Far the Most Common......
More Common means Cheaper Parts......

And,.... Find a Project that Doesn't say OMC, or Bayliner on it............

Good Luck,....... We're All Pullin' for Ya............................................... ;)

Re: 2.5L/3.0L automotive engine swap?

Well Bondo, let me give you the background on this boat..... Went to a local guy to buy an A/C part for my son-in-law's truck to have A/C before he gets back from Iraq.
The previous owner and I get to talking about things I've bought on ebay. Says he has a boat that he wants to put on ebay but they don't bring but about 2-5. I assume thousand. I didn't have the money but thought I'd look anyway.
One look at the interior, I thought this guy is nuts. Nice trailer and the boat looked nice BUT>>>>
Just as I was about to excuse myself, he said "yea if I could get someone to give me $200.00 for it, I'd take it.
Has a nice galanized trailer, good outdrive.... I can ALWAYS use a good trailer....
I like the way that bayliners look so I knew that I wouldn't lose my butt.
HOWEVER, I was hoping to get a running boat at a good price. Well it looks like that is out the window.
Can this outdrive handle the 4.3L????

We'll be here Helping Where Ever Possible.............

There are Thousands of posts from fellas Just like you,+ They Too, Thought they'd found the Diamond in the Rough,.....
But,
It Was More Ruff,..... Than Diamond............

Anyway,..... I Do Speak Chevies,.... But Don't Speak OMCs,........ ;)

That is what I was so surprised with, the hull seemed to be in good shape.

I figured a crank kit would be cheap enough and it has gotten worse with the pistons being stuck.

Will an 89 3.0L fit my Cobra?
I found one on ebay that may fit the bill.

Of course, I went to the dealer the other day and I'm REALLY considering just buying one and keeping it up. But to repower this one would be cheaper.
