Originally posted by D.:
PS: again, I don't claim to know all TCW3 oils - but wouldn't you expect it to be the colors I listed above - to dye the mixed fuel? Yellow/golden would be invisible when mixed with gas I would think. Just another reason to double check with the store.
Aviation fuel,(AVGAS), is also dyed so it can be distinguished from other octanes.
Red for 80 octane, blue for 100 octane and purple
for the 140 . There is also a green dye, used in the so-called "low lead" version of 100 octane (usually labled 100LL on the truck). The dyes are formulated so that if they are mixed, they go clear. So, if the sample isn't the right color
(or has no color) you've been mis-fueled.
The use of dye in avgas dates back at least to World War I. Two grades of avgas were in use then, Domestic Aviation Grade and Fighting Grade. The Fighting Grade was dyed red to distinguish it from the aviation grade.
Ok...I'm way off topic....carry on ;)

Re: 2 cycle oil question

Hear you on the dyed avgas. Not good to be at rotational speed on takeoff and realize that you don't have the power to lift off cause somebody misfueled you. Better to know on your preflight.
-----------------------
Have you ever been in the IP seat of a fully loaded KC135 at 150 knots on takeoff roll (rotates at 175) and all 4 engine fire warning lights come on?

Not a good feeling the first time you see it but back when we had all those guys lined up for fast takeoff during the cold war, if you were farther back that about #3 and it was a hot summer day, you got em.....but they went out after you got some air under your belly.....course you couldn't see where you were going with all the JP-4 waterinjection smoke in your face.

Mark

I would take it back and ask for a refund; Tell them you don't feel good about no dye in it. Also remind them that they talked you in to buying it they should give your money back. If not don't do any more busness with them.
Tim

Even if you used a gallon of standard automobile oil in the motor it's unlikely damage would happen. Long term MAYBE but not with one gallon. Years back all outboards used 30w car oil and they had long lives.

Yeah Bill I will give you that, but back in those days 25 hp was a whopper and it was like 35 cu in displacement.

I think the main difference in the two oils is additives which reduce rusting potential and fouling of the combustion chamber and exhaust from the burning oil.

Course too a 2 cycle runs on rollers and they just want a whisp of oil whereas the auto needed to drown the crank journals.

Mark
