I read an article on how these old 2 line preesure tanks are dangerous, is this true?, if so how hard is it to add a fuel pump to a 1955 evinrude 15hp? I have run this motor in a test tank and all seems well, should I convert it? thanks , mike

Re: 2 line pressure tank

there are a dozen posts about this. I don't agree they are dangerous as imo they are not. I run them all the time on different motors. In fact the boat in this pic is being run off of one. The primary reason I would convert one over is that pressure tanks are getting harder to find in good shape and they are expensive. There is a sticky on this and a recent thread.

the are no more dangerous, than the new metal tanks, and imho, less dangerous than the new plastic tanks. laingsoutboards.com has rebuild kits for the tanks. there are 2 types of tanks, call Jim, so you get the right kit.

Re: 2 line pressure tank

ANY tank is dangerous if it is not properly cared for and maintained. Since most (all?) 2 line tanks are now 55 year old +, the odds of one not being in proper condition is greater.

I run one and have no issues with it. I should probably plan someday to rebuild the tank and replace the hose, but for now it seems fine. I am in the habit of loosening the lid to release the pressure when I am not using it, rather than storing it pressurized, but that is just common sense. I don't leave it sitting in the hot sun either.

I have 2 of them, both seem to work well, so should I just use them?

By all means, go ahead and use them. As noted above, keep an eye out for leakage along the gaskets or o-rings, release the pressure when not in use, and make sure the hose is in good shape - and that means the ones inside the motor, too!

I have four of them and they all work fine. I do,however release the pressure when I put my boat away.

I've rebuilt a couple of pressure tanks, and as long as you pay attention, it's not hard.
But before you go to all that trouble, it's a good idea, given the required pressure, to simply make sure your hose-to-motor fitting's o-rings are working.
It is smart, cheap, and easy to replace the two o-rings in your fitting. Actually it's only easy once you get the hang of it. You need tweezers to remove the old o-rings. And you have to fool around with them a bit to install the new ones, but it's not really hard.
I did my last rebuild six months ago because the old tank sprang a leak in its bottom.
So.
When you repaint or rebuild a tank, I highly recommend that you pay extra attention to priming and painting the BOTTOM of the tank.
People worry a lot about rust in the tank. But the tank has a very fine screen in the fuel uptake, and the carb has a filter for anything that misses, so I don't worry so much about flaking rust.
Just about my own flaking.
Thanks everyone for a great forum.

Re: 2 line pressure tank

I have 3 of these and will be picking up 2 more tomorrow morning.

They are only dangerous if you spring a leak on the fuel side. If you have a leak on the fuel side, the entire tank of fuel can empty its contents into the boat. That would be dangerous.

I store mine with the caps loose. And when I get to where I am going by boat, I let the pressure out when I stop.

I've had several old motors with pressure tanks and they have worked fine. Just make sure they are in good shape. If you should happen to smoke a ciggarett in your boat, just be careful where the sparks go and that goes with any kind of tank you use.

Smoking in a boat with a regular tank would be more dangerous as it has a vent and thus gas fumes are present around the tank at all times. A pressure tank is sealed and no fumes present unless you crack the cap at the end. Long live the pressure tank... Oh wait... it's too late... dang...

Re: 2 line pressure tank

Been a long time since I had a pressure tank but like most who have replied i never had a problem, they worked fine. My concern today would be today's fuel and the fuel lines. Can you get an alcohol resistant duel line hose?

I recently bought a '58 5.5hp Johnson cheap, no tank. Like everyone has said the pressure tanks are not cheap so I did the conversion. Followed the directions in this article: http://www.outboard-boat-motor-repair.com/johnson/Pressureized Fuel Tanks.htm It worked great, I had a fuel pump from a 10hp Merc laying around so I used it instead of buying the the Mikuni pump.

Pressure tanks get my vote too. I have two of them as well and i like them. I kind of consider them part of the nostalgia of having the old outboards. Just wouldn't be the same without 'em I guess.

Re: 2 line pressure tank

Hello,
With interest I have read your info on changing o rings on the two line systems. Would you be kind enough to provide a little more detail about how you do it. I have two pressurized tanks and as yet have not had to replace the o rings but I am sure I will sometime. I would really like to know how you go about it without damaging the rather rare OMC fitting. Actually I bought my second tank just to have a spare fitting.
I am fairly new to the forum and to engines. I bought a 1958 Ad 12 Johnson 7.5 Seahorse in really nice shape. It came with a 4 U.S. gallon tank.
hope to hear from you soon.
Thanks so much.

SPK, search the forum as it's been explained many times before. And whereabouts in Ontario are you?
