I would like to replace the 1999 Evinrude (50 H.P.) on my 15' Lowe with a new, 4 cycle, 50 H.P., but I'm concerned about the weight diffference. Which 4 cycle engine comes closest to the weight of my Evinrude?

Honda boasts being the lightest 50 at around 210lbs.
Even with carburetors, it is a sweet outboard.

if you are concerned about weight then you should consider a 2 cycle evinrude etec.heres the link if you would like to know more http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/ them new evinrudes are probaly going to be even lighter then what you have now.there also much faster then a 4 stroke. good luck.

The Etec 50 falls in the middle as far as weight go with the current 4 strokes. Your old 50hp was probibly ~200# with tilt and trim. I really don't think 20-30# more weight is going to disturb your boat that much.

the etec's are the lightest outboard you can buy right now due to the simple fact that they are 2 strokes.go to there website and watch the vids when they compare the weight or just look at etec next to a 4 stroke and you will see the huge diff.

50hp engine range

ETEC 240#
Suzuki 243#
Yamaha 233# (lighter than Etec)
Yamaha big foot 243#
Mercury 248#

Like I said, in the 50hp range Etec is NOT the lightest and most of these motors are with in a 10# range of each other. I'm not here to start and argument, Etecs are good engines but I don't like when people claim stuff that isn't true. In most cases its true that Etec is lighter but not this situation.

Why not stay with 2 stroke, I noticed in the 75hp range there's almost 100lbs difference and that always means Performance/Economy. You could step up in HP and still be lighter then any 50hp 4stk.

i agree with you 100%.theres no reson to go to 4 stroke there way over rated.there heavyer and slower.and if i was you i would buy now i read a article that says this could be the last year for 2 strokes.im not totally sure if the 2 strokes would use less fuel even though they are lighter.the yamahas and merc 2 strokes still use the classic carburetors and at this time them outboards do not meet E.P.A regulations and the yamahas and mercurys are running out of clean air credits fast so its now or never.heres the article that i was talking about http://www.boats.com/news-reviews/article/outboard-expert-emissions

Re: 2 stroke/4 stroke swap

Nope, all the wieghts I listed are 4 stroke. The yamaha 50hp 2 stroke is ~160-170#. At this point I wouldn't waste my money on a "classic" carbed 2 stroke. Etec or 4stroke will get 200-300% better fuel economy trolling, 50-70% better at crusing speed and 20-30% better at WOT than a carbed 2 stroke. My only comparison is an older johnson 70hp 2 stroke to my current Johnson (suzuki) 70hp 4 stroke. I use 2 gallons of gas trolling 8+ hours now, use to suck the whole 6gallon can in 8 hours. Pulling tubes It used to suck 6gallons an hour, I'm down to about 4gallons an hour now. The ability to carry a normal converasation at WOT with out yelling it great too!.

buring more fuel=going faster thats wahy a carb 2 stroke would kill any 4 stroke they make some noice and some smoke but boy are they fast.

oh and btw the 2 stroke etec evinrudes are faster have better fuel economy cleaner and quieter then any four stroke just go to there website and order a free DVD or just watch it on there site .they have have some kind of super computer build in.and alot of lakes now will only alollow etecs because how clean they are.

Another thing to remember is the increased maintenance costs associated with 4 stroke outboards. Things like valve adjustments and timing belt replacements are not cheap and the engine oil must be changed yearly. You do not have to do this with a 2 stroke engine, I like the new E-tecs but you are going to have to spend a significant amount of money on a new engine so shop around and see what you like.

How many times have you watched that video? 200-300 times? Its a Video MADE BY EVINRUDE to promote evinrude. Do you honesty think they would show anything good about other companies outboards???? As far as clean emissions There are several 3 star outboards out there by many companies which means they are on the same level as far as emissions are concerned. Looking at the charts on the EPA website the etecs are blowing about the same pollutants as the efi 4 strokes are.

Etec quieter than ANY 4 stroke? have you rode in a boat with a johnson/evinrude/suzuki 4 stroke? have you even rode in a boat with an Etec???? Etec are pretty quite compared to old 2 strokes (my buddy has an etec 50) but not as quite as most 4 strokes are (my 70hp Johnson 4 stroke is quiter than my buddies etec 50).

Honda BF50, 212lbs., 3star EPA rated, 50hp@5750, no DVD but offers FLASH player on thier website.
Evinrude e-tec50, 240lbs., 3star EPA rated, 50hp@5750, free DVD.

The Honda is 28lbs. lighter, same EPA rating, same HPper RPM, and is quieter.
Fuel consumption depends on the conditions between the two.

The "major" maintenence required with the BF50, sparkplugs, valve adjustment, oil and filters, takes about an hour every year or so.
The timing belt takes about an hours time every 5 years or so.

The Evinrude still requires sparkplugs, oil and filters, and yes you will save maybe 30 minutes on the 100 hour service and a hour and $30 on the belt every 5 years.

Re: 2 stroke/4 stroke swap

Why don't you lighten up a bit on preaching the E-tec gospel of "super engine and all others are junk", OMC? It got old long before you showed up here and it is still old and annoying. It is at least part bull, which makes the parts that aren't bull suspect.

E-tec is a very good engine, but not better than all others at everything, and everything else is not junk. They are NOT lighter, faster, quieter than any other engine, as proven by facts and testimonials above.

Give it a rest. PLEASE :(

Re: 2 stroke/4 stroke swap

I greatly appreciate ALL the current 2STROKE and 4STROKE marine manufactures for offering excellent products, excellent competition and aggressive reseach and development.

It has gotten down to which dealership franchise is competent, local, and convienient, individual preference, and which engines color matches the boat.

This is really the most important question. This is what your shopping for.

Evinrude--Mercury. Evinrude--Mercury. Just buy an old Chrysler or Force and be done with it!
