2-stroke or 4-stroke?

I just bought this 1962 mercury kiekhaefer 500hp today. The man said the boat was kinda dragging along when he had it in the water. As I looked at the motor I seen the cover said 4 stroke, but as I paid and left the man handed me a thing of oil for the motor.
I think he has been putting oil in a 4 stroke motor. Is there a why I can double check to see if the motor is a 4 stroke. I dont want to clean the gas tank and find out it is a 2 stroke and i burn up the motor.


And to make things interesting there is NO serial number on the motor.

Hi,

It is a 2 stroke. Put the oil in the gas.
Merc did not have 4 strokes in 62.

Do you mean 50 hp. I didn't think anyone made a 500 hp.

Merc Crusier made a 500HP but not in 1962.
To many typo's to be sure. I just went off the

mercury kiekhaefer

That puts it in the 60's. as an outboard.

The model is probably a 500- indicating a 50 HP. As already said there were no Merc 4 stroke outboard engines in the 60's. IF they made a 500 HP, it wouldn't be a 2 stroke unless it was diesel.

The oil is for the fuel at a 50-1 mix. 1 16 oz can of 2 cycle oil to 6 gallons of gas.

yes sorry it is a mercury 500 50 hp...lol Now that we figured out what year it is. can you help me try to get the shift linkage in the lower unit on. When i took off the lower unit it was in neutral and came off just fine. Now that i want to put it back on it doesnt want to line up. I put the linkage on and got it to go on once but it wont go into foward. HELP.

Installing the lower unit in neutral is difficult and not what the reapir manual tells you to do. Put the control box (if hooked up) in forward and then put your lower unit in forward. The reverse cam will be off center at about 1:30/2:00 position. Now install your unit. If all is OK in the foot, you'll be in forward when you shift at the control box.

Someone's post script out there says; GET A MANUAL! I agree, you will not be sorry you did.

Getting manuals here in the UK is hard to find, any ideas of getting a manual for a merc 80hp outboard around 90`s model ?
