For me, it's all about size, ease of maintenance, and smell. 2 stroke all the way.

My father and i had a 23 scout cc with a f150 4 banger . The boat was a 2008 and motore it had 23 hours on it and I went offshore 69 miles and upon return it died at the Ji boue in the inlet. The motor was under warrenty and they said faulty fuel pump and replaced it. Somthing about shavings etc.... Ever since then the motor never ran right.... We sold a 89K boat for 40K because the motor was a rotten apple...... Since then 2 stroke all the way. Yes the technoligy is old but it is perfected. And on the water especially if your going offshore you need reliability...............:):D

2 stroke, because thats what I have. They are easier to work on.

I'd have to say that I'd love to have a 4 stroke for their smooth, quiet, fuel efficiency. But I'm gonna stay with 2 strokes for now because I love being able to fix them myself and get quick power.

I like my 60hp 4 stroke Johnson for all the reasons given above. The only negative would be the extra weight. As far as being more difficult to work on, I've yet to touch it except for normal maintenance. I also like the fact you don't have to keep filling an oil tank. Change the oil like a car and you're done... You can also idle all day if you want and it will never load up....

2-strokes have hit their technical boom, then they went to DFI, and pressurized systems. Therefore "fixing" something that was "borken", and doing this made a 2-stroke burn like a 4 stroke, but made it complex and not desirable; and more expensive to own and operate. 4-strokes took off, and at first were heavy and underpowered. Since then they've gotten lighter and simpler, less expensive and more dependable.

Everyone likes to jump on the band wagon of something new and exciting, and fit in with the cool crowd. Heres the problem. From then to now, and into the future, these Ob's are going through so many changes that unless you have the serial number, and know everything about your particular motor, your going to get parts that won't fit, or fit a different variant because so many changes occur so often...even from one year to the next. Second is they will continue to get lighter and simpler but it will hit a point....then start to become more complex and heavier again as new technology come into the marine world. Then eventually 4-strokes will be the second option again. Never have used 2-strokes been so hard to come by, and never have I seen newer 4-strokes that are willing to be equally traded for a used 2-stroke.

Still puzzled at how a 4-stroke can sustain 5-6,000 rpm's for a long life span, without substantial wear problems in it's life time. I think for now I am staying with my 2-strokes, and the good ones...with reeds and premix gas, can't beat the smell of smoke mixed with the early morning fog.

Also did you know......you CAN catch fish without a Z-9 Nitro or Ranger, side sonar, $25,000 Merc 250hp 4-stroke motor, Bass Pro Shop sponsored gear, camera man, and a 2011 Toyota Tundra? Yes, it's true. Your boat will also get you there WITHOUT going into debt repowering with a new 4-stroke, even though the bass pro on t.v. said it was'nt so.

191seanymphstriper, that a sweet boat. Got a little 14' BayRayder side console with a 98' Merc 25. Can't beat the little light boats that run like a scalded dog and get in the creeks. And have the room to carry people and gear.
