Actually I think that it has less to do with that, and more to do with the oodles of posts consisting of someone complaining about their zap, or a thread like "Hey (insert iboats handle)" that turns into a 20 post thread between two people making small talk.........etc.

Yeah there is some sort of click here where the memebers who have been here awhile feel they are somehow better served to make a post than others......is it right?...no; But it is not the reason why I think so many are fed up with DC.

In chat a comment needs to be relevant to the conversation. A happy face is a relevant response to a funny that you like, even if it breaks the rules and is about to be ZAPPED..

Disdainful comments about the style of the forum, members, moderators or the moderation are not welcome and are possible candidates for editing or deletion. Email questions, suggestions, ideas, comments or complaints are always welcome.

Posts may be edited or deleted for any reason or for no reason. Members may be banned from the site for any reason or for no reason. There is, of course, always a reason or many reasons. If you have been asked repeatedly not to do something. . . well, you can figure that out, I think.

JB, I agree with what you are saying. My biggest reason for agreement is that iboats is a private enterprise and therefore can do whatever they feel like. This extends to those to whom they delegate authority (moderators).

I feel (my opinion) this thread has evolved beyond the issue of the moderators direction of the forum. There are some members that feel that their interests are above those of other members of the forum.

For example, some members only like to partake in political or socioeconomic threads. Good for them! Personally, I grow weary of the those threads where the same positions are espoused ad nauseum. I live inside the DC beltway where the national news is my local news. The last thing I need is for some pseudo intellectual elitist to snub their nose at me while they recite the party line. Not to mention that while some brush off my comments as uninformed or insiginificant, they should realize that my wife works for a beltway bandit developing policy decisions for the current administration, a close friend is a colonel inside the Pentagon, and yet another close friend consults with a CIA terrorism task force. My voice gets heard plenty by people that actually matter and I don't need to come here and go over it all with people who are so far out of the loop that they don't even know what the beltway is.

I come to the dock to relax. Not everything I have to say is heavy or significant. Does that mean I/other-members am/are not welcome to participate?

JB, you once mentioned that people come and go at the dock according to their needs. You said this was natural and happened in all forums (Please don't make me look up the post :( ). So, if a few "old timers" get bored and leave, isn't that just the natural flow?

Like, I said, I completely agree that iboats has the final say on what and who is and is not appropriate. My comments are meant to move beyond that. I am addressing the attitude of some forum membrs who seem to think that their opinions reign supreme.

Thanks for listening.

I personally feel that dockside chat is a place for boaters and friends to get together and share stories, whats going on in their lives, pass a few jokes around and visit. Politics and religion are bound to come up since they are such a large part of our everyday lives. If we handle these conversations with common decency and respect for other's opinions no flame wars would ever exist. Unfortunately, sometimes we don't. Thats when the mods step in and rightly so.

I hate to see good friends leave because of the comments of a few.

Just my 2 cents.

I think a few leave because they are bored or are offended by the flame wars. We try to keep the debates civil, but we have lives away from the keyboard just like the rest of you and aren't monitoring every thread in real time.

Some are annoyed by a few topics. They always have the option of not reading them, but when the majority of the topics annoy the majority of regulars we need to apply some leverage.

I do think, however, that most who leave do so because of changes in their lives that allow less time for iboating or because their needs change and iboats is no longer relevant to their daily lives.

LadyFish says it very well.

Keep in mind that all of the above applies mostly to DC, which is just one of many, many fora but requires about 90% of the moderation.

Don't I feel like the biggest tard on iboats. I never figured out that RF and Techno were the same guy. :(
Yes, you are the biggest tard. At least you have something to be proud of. ;)

Good grief guys, if you think dockside chat is bad about flame wars and pettyness, I have a couple of other boards I can point you to that are 10 times worse.

You gotta learn to ignore the stupidity in our daily life or it will drive you to stupidness. (Makes sense to me  )

Ken

Hey JB can you list a few handles that have been banned? I would find it interesting to see what handles I recognize that got the ax.

Kind of like driving past a car wreck...

:D

Re: 2 Suggestions for forum, mods, iboats.

I could, but I won't. I will tell you some whys.

Constant use of profanity.
Promoting personal business.
Promoting competitive business.
Starts flame wars.
Persistent posting of banned topics.
Persistent insults to members.
Over-trolling.
Generally bellicose.
Use of pseudonym to bash and insult members, mods and iboats.
Generally supercillious manner in demeaning members.
Domination of DC with post padding nonsense.

Most of the time these people get warned and asked to reform before any action is taken. Not always.

Occasionally a member is reinstated after promising to reform.

I don't exactly know why, but that reason made me chuckle. :)

No disrespect intended. Just found it funny.

That must mean trolling is allowed as long as you don't over-troll. I think FWS has declared it endangered.

You highly underestimate the other forum members here froggy. There's only been a couple of members here that think so highly of themselves as you but few were so full of BS as you are. Chief ;)

Thanks Chief. Glad to know where I stand with you. I don't think I've ever said anything negative to you or about you. It's good to know who the bad apples are.

Don't get your panties in a bunch there froggy, I was simply making reference to your "beltway" comments. Since I don't know you personally I don't have an opinion there. Chief ;)
