200 Johnson stalls at idle & when put in gear sooner or later.

Help Please, I have been reading these fourms for days.

The motor is a 1999 Johnson 200, I don’t know the history of this motor. It came on the 24WA Wellcraft I bought used.

It just won’t idle right. It fires right up and runs great at all speeds above Idle. Sometimes it will idle for anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes but sooner or later it will stall. It sounds like it is idling good and then it will cough and die. It will start right up after stall. If I pump the prime ball it seems to help a little sometimes. It does this in neutral and in gear.

I am thinking it is a fuel problem. This is a VRO motor that the VRO pump has been disconnected. I have tested spark and have good spark on all cylinders after replacing the shift switch interrupt. I have decarbed the motor and checked all hoses and fittings. Everything looks good.

Could my fuel pump be bad and the motor still run so good above idle. Maybe at higher rpm’s the motor creates more suction and does not need the pump so much? Can I use new fuel pump without the vro pump? How hard is it to rebuild the vro pump.

Next the Carbs, they all look good, and clean. The hoses all look in good shape. I don’t see any fuel leaking out anywhere. Are the butterflies supposed to be closed all the way at idle? The throttle has to be moved forward pretty far before the even start to open. How hard is it to rebuild the carbs, do you have to adjust the linkage after rebuild? Do you have any info on how to rebuild them? Do the rebuild kits come with detailed instructions?

Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

Jim

The butterflies should not be closed at idle unless the choke is activated. Possibly linkage is adjusted wrong or manual choke, if you have it, is engaged. (Link and sync).
Carbs are fairly simple and straight forward to rebuild.
I would suggest you verify linkage first.

Thanks Mike. I will check linkage. I also noticed that at wide open throttle the throttle valves (butterflies) are noy open all the way. The throttle valves are closed at idle and don't open till you move the throttle forward a bit. This does not look right to me.

Jim

I am sitll waiting for a answer on my linkage question.

I am going to rebuild the carbs, will see if that helps. I will let the forum know if this fixes my problem.

Jim

Ext711,

I can't tell you about your motor specifically, but I know that doing the link & synch proceedure fixed idle stalling problems I had because the timing advance was not correct for the butterfly setting.

Give it a try before doing the rebuild and see if that fixes it. If you do rebuild, you would be wise to go throught the proceedure again to ensure that no adjustments on the linkages get changed.

Good luck!

Mark42 thank you for your input.

I have tried the link sync with no luck. I was able to get it to idle higher but it still sputered and stalled. I bought the rebuild kits today. I hope to have time tommorow to rebuild them.

I dont think on my model you have to disconect any linkage to rebuild carbs. So I hope the linkage is fine and needs no adjustment. We will see.

I just finshed rebuilding the carbs. It idled much better on the hose, it did not even try to stall or sputer. I will be putting the boat in the water later for a test ride. I will let the group know what the results are.

I do have some questions about the carbs that I will ask later.

I hope this post helps others.

Thanks to MG and Mark42 for your input.

Jim

Be prepared to readjust your idle on the water as it will drop in rpms because of the water pressure.

fireman,
the boat should be set to idle IN the water then?
am i reading that right?
hence the ilde will be slightly higher out of water?

That's correct. Idle should be set when there is backpressure on the exhaust, ie. in the water, and it will be a little higher when you run on muffs.
