the info: I checked oil prior to starting after winter break (nothing odd noted. Ran motor for 20 minutes on the muffs at low speed (approx 1,000 rpm) to warm oil for oil change. Shut off engine (left water on foot of motor) and began to pump out old oil through dipstick. Noticed milky color. Before long, heard water gurgle noise in valve cover and saw water filling up valve cover. Shut off water and drained all the water and oil from the pan. Changed oil filter and put in 5 quarts of oil to at least get oil back up in motor. Started motor for one minute and then shut off. We did have a very hard freeze this year (approx 20 degrees for 36 hours) and the boat was not winterized this year. Any ideas where to start and what the prognosis might be? Appreciate the help in advance...
Scott Coghill

I noticed a previous reply to a post from Alaska said something about a possible cracked intake manifold, how do I check for this? Also, my 5.7 isn't leaking water out of the block, only into the oil.

Block all the coolant hoses going to and from the engine. Rig a way to pump air into the system and listen for the leak. Cracks can occure anywhere and usually not to make it easy on the mechanic. You may have to pull the intake manifold after the pressure test and look for cracks. No magic prcess for finding the leak.

You Need a New Motor........

Test it like Don explained,..........

At a bare Minimun,.... You're going to need a Short-Block..........

Are you guys talking about the four coolant lines coming from the top of the thermostat housing? How much pressure to put in? On a second question, when running the motor out of the water on the hose flush muffs, the Mercruiser Tech manual says in bold capital letters not to have hose on fully, is it possible I blew something out by having to much pressure on hose? Is it possible to get water to leak into oil if water is left on the foot with the engine off for 5 minutes or so? Thanks for your replies, if a motor long or short is needed, where is best place to get this?

the coolant and oil passages are divided between each other with steel partitions in the block.[so to speak]no water hose can blow thru them.you are cracked.probably under the intake as suggested where the water can run down into the oil pan and fill up.

It appears the plastic intake gasket set was cracked around one of the water ports in the head. Our local NAPA dealer said the plastic gasket sets used in 2000 5.7 GM motors for both cars/trucks and marine applications weren't designed well. Here is my new problem: How do I get all the white yuck out of the motor once I put the intake back on?
Thanks in Advance,
Scott

You are going to get a lot of different answers to that one. I was told by an old mechanic to put in fresh oil and add a quart of kerosene and let it idle about ten minutes and change the oil again. I did this and it didnt seem to hurt my engine, but a lot of nasty stuff came out

Thanks Jeff, Someone also mentioned a quart od deisel fuel as a cheaper version of motor flush. I am hoping the intake set does the trick, I want to go boating...Anyone know if all the 5.7 liter intakes were this plastic crap?
