I have a 2000 175 hp Ficht with 130 hours on it and blew #4 cylinder recently. Prior to blowing motor would spitter and sput after runing a while. When I stopped and waited a few moments then recraked the motor it would run good for a while again and then repeat problem. Later in the day after fishing for a while on the trolling motor when I cranked the engine it was slow to get on plane but would all of a sudden kick in and go. After traveling a short distance the motor would die. After the second time this happend and I went to crank the motor I heard the knock. The motor has 130 hours on it and the mechanic told me the computer showed it had over heated 27 times. The alarm has never went off on this motor. What could have caused the over heating? I suppose the over heating caused the failure of #4 cylinder. My extended warranty would not cover the repair as it was said to be caused by pre-ignition. If I just replace the piston this problem may reoccur if I can't determine the cause of pre-ignition.

Welcome to iboats. Do you know if that engine has had any updates? You may have had a lean injector on #4 which would give you your drivability problems as well as pre-igniton and subsequent seizing of #4.

Thanks MasterChief,

No I do not know if it has the updates. The hole in the piston is dead center about the size of a half dollar.

Thanks for giving us Marines a ride on your big boats. I'm a retired MasterSergeant.

Hole in the center of the piston is seldom due to overheat... Overheat would more likely be burned off the exhaust side and smeared all over the cylinder wall.

Well just a guess but it sounds like it slammed into a spark plug or got to close to soon.

I have a 2000 Evinrude 150 Ram Ficht and the piston blew- only 130 hours, no warning light or auto shut down, no oil light either. I am getting an estimate now at Willeys Marine in McGregor MN. I still don't know why it happened?

Re: 2000 175hp Fitch blown piston

If the hole in the piston looks like it was burned thru with a torch, with melted looking edges, then the motor suffered pre-ignition problems. Most of the time it is caused by carbon buildup that starts to glow and ignites the fuel before the sparkplug fires, greatly advancing the "timing". Pull the exhaust pressure sensor and see if it is carbon stuck.

If the hole has jagged edges that looks like a hammer and chisel punched thru it, then it suffered detonation damage. That is caused by poor fuel quality, lean running, overpropping, and overheating, or any combination there-of.

If the motor was not propped to run about 5800 rpm with an average load, then that would be part of the cause.
