I don't have a lot of experience with Johnson outboards and am trying to help a friend with servicing his water pump. The Johnson outboards I have worked on were smaller and the shift shaft was easy to find but this one is very crowded.
My questions:
Does it need to be in gear when the gearcase comes off? I assume so, because the drive shaft is splined and I would need to rotate it to engage the powerhead- forward, or reverse?
Do I need to remove a bolt in order to disconnect the shift shaft or is the shaft spring-loaded in the gearcase?
If someone has an exploded diagram from the manual, it would help.
Thanks, in advance.
