I don't have a lot of experience with Johnson outboards and am trying to help a friend with servicing his water pump. The Johnson outboards I have worked on were smaller and the shift shaft was easy to find but this one is very crowded.

My questions:
Does it need to be in gear when the gearcase comes off? I assume so, because the drive shaft is splined and I would need to rotate it to engage the powerhead- forward, or reverse?

Do I need to remove a bolt in order to disconnect the shift shaft or is the shaft spring-loaded in the gearcase?

If someone has an exploded diagram from the manual, it would help.

Thanks, in advance.

Stand on the starboard side of the motor.----Find the L-shaped shift lever below the bottom carburetor.-----Remove hitch pin on that shaft.-----Now push that shaft to the port side of the motor.----Rotate that shaft and shift rod is now disconnected.

Do I need to remove the lower shroud before doing this?

Well----That might help you see and understand this simple procedure.----Might help on re-assembly.-----Do not turn the shift rod during this repair procedure.

I have seen the videos that show the bolt removal to allow sliding the gearcase out- I think that as long as it's installed with the correct orientation I'll be OK. My friend found a video showing the shroud removed, so I'll do that first.

Thanks

The shift rod must not be turned as it will lead to shifting issues.

Pull the clevis pin under the carb. Slide the shift linkage to starboard. pin will release from the hole in the top of the shift rod. Remove trim tab and all bolts. gearcase will pull off.

To reinstall, the dog leg in the shift rod must point forward. Mate the driveshaft splines with the crankshaft splines. When you shove the gearcase into the midsection, the shift rod will be pushed down. You will need to "hook" the eye in the top and pull it up to allow the linkage to be reconnected.

You might get a service manual, as I assume you are replacing the waterpump or some other service. Water pump replacement is not straight forward.
