2000 Suzuki DF70 Thermostat replacement?

Fired my "new to me" Suzuki up and after about 5-7 minutes the warning buzzer went off (about every 5-7 seconds) The tach had not lights light up so I turned the boat off and decided to charge the battery, checked the oil, the water pump, cleaned the telltale hole, and after that i fired up the motor and within 3 minutes the buzzer went off again. I am using double sided muffs with a single inlet for my water hose. I am not even sure the motor is even over heating and the pee stream although fairly weak in my opinion was not that warm. My next step was to check the thermostat. I read through the clymers manual and thermostat should open in-between 126 - 134 degrees. While testing with my digital thermometer the thermostat opened slightly at 140 degrees and progressively opened more as the temp went up. My question is weather or not that is acceptable, and could this be causing my warning buzzer to go off without showing a light on the tacometer? Thanks for any help.

ps. can i take out the thermostat out and give it a test on the muffs?

I cleaned off the thermostat, reinstalled it, and will give it a test run in a few minutes. I also noticed the external tank was a little tight and probably not venting really well so i opened it up a little more. I hope this fixes the problem, but only time will tell.

Ok, that did not fix my problem. Boat ran fine for about 7-8 minutes again, and then the dreaded buzzer went off. I shut the engine down and quickly took off the thermostat cover and noticed the thermostat was wide open. was hoping that may be my issue. Still I decided to let the engine cool down and then run it without the thermostat... buzzer went off again in 2-3 minutes. I then placed the lower unit in water up to where the muffs cover and replaced the thermostat. fired the boat up and no pee stream within 10 seconds, so I shut it down. This problem is getting harder to diagnose, because the tach is not lighting up (just the buzzer) my next option is to have the battery tested, but i really do not think that is the problem, because it should send a warning right away after 30 seconds of being under 9.0 volts right? anyway its worth a shot.

Tilted the engine up while in the garage, and noticed oil running down the lower unit. Traced it in between the engine block and engine holder. would this give off a warning buzzer, and if so wouldn't the oil light come on?

If you have low oil pressure the buzzer will go off. There is oil in the engine??????? The oil may be expelled because the engine has a cracked head or block and the crankcase is full of water which turns the oil into a chocolate milk shake appearance. You need a factory service manual to determine WHAT the alarm is and WHY the indicator lights in the tach are not working. You might also question the prior owner about this but their response will likely be, ran fine when it left here!!!!!!! Another reason to run a motor before leaving the premises -- preferably while it is still attached to a boat.

Since the motor is now 12 years old, one might ask if the impeller has ever been changed.

already checked the oil, water impeller, and test drove the boat prior to purchasing it. I am clueless as to what the problem can be.

I have the same motor you have, I also have the factory service manual for the motor. I just looked through the diagnostic section and didnt see anything about getting a warning buzzer with no lights. Your sure there aren't any lights flashing? And try and figure out a pattern of the buzzes. If there is a pattern, I can look it up and tell you whats wrong. There may be more then one fault so listen until you hear the pattern repeat.

If it was an over temp, you would have the temp light lit.

Thanks coaster, I am going to give it another run tomorrow.. I will check the pattern and write it down. I have gone as far as cupping the tachometer with my hands to check to double check no lights were going off.

All the lights light up when you turn the key to the on position right? Well I think they do at least. The needle should also swing to a number and a combination of lights and buzzes will tell you the hours on the motor.

When I put the key and turn it the alarm sounds... I believe this is just a check of the buzzer/warning system prior to starting the engine. Also no lights come on when the put the key in or when i turn it. The tachometer does jump to 1000 prior to starting.

99yam40, I am going to run the boat tomorrow and time the length of the buzzer, and the amount of time between. Where can I find what the codes mean? I only have a clymers manual. thanks

Re: 2000 Suzuki DF70 Thermostat replacement?

Tell me the code ill look in the service manual. I just went and tried on my boat. All my lights on the tach light up if i insert the key and turn it to the on position, not cranking, just to the first stop. If you dont have those lights you want know what code your throwing. Youll probably have to figure out why your lights arent lighting? Maybe a fuse?

The jump to 1000 is telling you the hours on the motor. Not 1000 but somewhere around 100, but you need to know what lights are lit with the needle reading.

Re: 2000 Suzuki DF70 Thermostat replacement?

When I put the key in and turn to the on position, but not (turning over the engine) i get a beep, and the tach jumps. No lights ever light up. I am beginning to think there may be an issue with my tach not lighting up. The clymers manual goes into some detail about testing so I will do some reading on that. I ran the boat again today and after 6:02 minutes the buzzer went off for 2 seconds then came back on after 6 seconds. I let the boat run for two more minutes and the buzzer never turned off or changed intervals. I then shut the boat down for one minute and the buzzer immediately started back up with the same interval.

I wonder if it could be a maintenance reminder after so many hours.
Might read up on that also on how to reset

I have tried reading through the clymers manual and there was nothing I found about resetting maintenance reminders, however I have placed a bid on another manual which seems more informative.

Re: 2000 Suzuki DF70 Thermostat replacement?

Just got done testing the tach lights (check engine, temp, rev, and oil) all turned on. There were two green and red wires and two black wires that were disconnected so I will to some research and see what they are for. Reading wire diagrams for me will be a first so it may be a while before I can return with an answer.
