2001 Glastron VP 5.0GL-C, Raw Water pump leaking at plastic tube/pump housing joint

Fellow Iboaters,

I attached a water hose for the first time to my engine to be able to attempt the first fire-up of the rebuilt engine.

We found a multitude of small leaks in the water system that we successfully addressed. However, there were two that really we were not able to fix: both of the freewheeling tubes that attach to the raw water pump were leaking. Granted, this was with the hose flowing a healthy dose of water and a plug in the water inlet (to prevent the hose water from coming out of the back in an effort to fill the manifolds and heat exchanger with water - which proved futile).

What the heck? What kind of seal do they have there that allows it to freewheel? Is this seal somehow only activated by the vacuum and pressure of the pump? Did I create a false positive by overpressurizing the system? We tried to patch with some teflon tape, tube, and hose clamps. It improved things, but did not solve the leak. Any suggestions on course of action?

Thanks,

Joe

Not sure I know what you mean by "freewheeling tubes" got any pictures to show what you are referring to?

Also a picture of where you hooked up the water and what you plugged. Something doesn't sound right at all.

Please see attached.

An additional note regarding the "freewheeling tubes": The plastic tubes that insert to the cast pump housing tubes can rotate infinitely (non-threaded). Maybe there should be an o-ring seal there that has completely and utterly relaxed?

You need a new pump. Those tubes should not turn.

You have the older design tubes. For a time, Volvo was making the housing out of brass and the tubes out of plastic. As you have seen, the plastic-brass joint ends up leaking. The new design is solid brass, so the tubes and housing are one piece - all brass.

My tubes leaked like yours did, and I did a cheap fix on them: I superglued the exterior only of the joint between the brass and the plastic. It held up for 1 season, but I broke it free again when I was winterizing the boat. I haven't decided yet whether I'll try superglue again or pony up the $120 (or so) for the new solid brass part.

Your pump is shot, replacing it should get your water suction issue fixed if there is no bits and pieces of the impeller in the system.

$120??? Where did you find that deal? I replaced one of mine early last season. Cheapest I found was somewhere around $350-375 for the pump. I think Volvo list is closer to $600. Is the housing available without the remaining parts?

Yes, the $120 is/was just for the housing. Looks like the price has gone up slightly since last year, it is now $133 here on iboats. Just do a search for part 3858115 in the iboats store search box.

I have the exact same pump. Last year sanded the area and cleaned it real good, then used J.B. Weld to seal the joint. It worked great!
