could be coil, as 2 cylinders run off one coil.

If you are losing 2 cylinders opposite each other (say 1 & 2) it could be a coil as this is 2 seperate coils molded together but if its a bank (say 1 & 3)are dropping its possible stator or pack problem.

Does it have a shift interrupt switch, if yes , disconnect it and test run it.

If no... try swapping coils and see if the problem follows the coil.

If the problem stays put then I'd look at the power pack and stator.
If the insulation is melting and dripping down from the stator, thats a good sign its gone south.

Otherwise you need a peak reading meter and the shop manual to do the tests that will pinpoint the trouble .

Get the meter off ebay $75.

Sounds like S.L.O.W. is activating; check your cooling system.

good call ezeke. could be, but i thought that just limits rpms, not kill cylinders.

The S.L.O.W. systems limits RPM by killing the spark to one bank of cylinders. it is controlled by the temp sensor on one of the heads.
