Im replacing the crank in a 9.9 4 stroke i picked up cheap. When you look up main bearings there is 4 different part numbers. My question is what do the colors mean? Green, black, brown and yellow. I checked for hours online and found nothing.

The bearings are a select fit, to get the correct clearence. The old bearing should have a color mark.

No sick with the flu is allowed.....:D

There are alpha and numeric codes stamped on the crank, and on the flange of the block. The service manual has a table in it, and you locate the codes in the table to determine the correct color bearing to use.

The cranks are not serviceable, there are no oversize bearings available, the bearings are about 4 times more expensive than the automotive equivalent.

Very very screwy way to to it.

I have researched and researched, and it seems the Suzuki 70HP is a mix of designs between the Suzuki G13 and G16 auto engines.
I am assembling a 70HP engine using auto parts instead of the over priced marine stuff Suzuki sells.
We will see what happens.

Every thing i do ends up the hard way! There is no colors on any of my bearings! Just some numbers, the lower bearings have gi02 and the uppers have bd02. The crank is getting spray welded because i refuse to spend $350 on a new crank. The guy said it should hold and thats good enough for me. So any info would be awsome! I will pm my email.

Spray welded!!! Now you are talking. I have considered that, but was not sure if it would hold.
So, what RPMs is that motor good for? Please post back the max RPMs, and PLEASE post back the results of the spray welding, including the process details, if you don't mind. The 70s I am working on will hit 5k, so I am unsure of the ability of a spray weld to hold.
I am gonna do it tho, one day....

I think the crank is chucked into a fixture that turns it, then it is heated, then spray welded, then ground back down to size.
Let me know about the hardening...does the spray welding destroy that?

Gotta know these things!!!

Thanks.

Oh, and usually the existing paint marks are gone from the bearing, or so discolored that you cannot tell what it was originally.

Find the codes on the block yet? On the crank, they are on one of the counterweights. You will have a line of codes for each main bearing (3?), and a line for each rod bearing (2). They indicate the exact size of the journal. On the block, they indicate the exact size of the opening where the crank sits (saddle) of the block when assembled.

I do not have manual that matches this engine. I have a service update dated 2004, This says the crankshaft and bearing ares numbered. The rod does not have a bearing, but comes in 2 sizes. You are at the mercy of a good dealer. Call FRIDAYS close to NewPort news VA, if anyone knows are can help you in the US is probley him.

PS. I would take a shot of 2 stroke oil, if it would make me feel better.

My crank is at the machine shop now and he's going on vacation soon so i wont see it or the codes on it for about two weeks. Thats fine by me its still a little cold in south jersey for boating. I will do my best to keep posting but this may take a while. And ill see if i can get more info on the spray welding process when i pic up the crank.

I have done spray welding before on many semi-large water pump shafts, You put the shaft in a lathe running SLOW. The torch has a small bottle mounted on top so you have gravity feed, heat the shaft up as it is rotating, when it gets hot enough, pull the lever & this powder flows thru the torch, is preheated & bonds to the shaft. The powdered metal can be gotten in different grades. What I used was a high grade combo of silcon bronze & nickle. Once you get the amount you want on, stop spraying & let it continue to rotate as it cools which eliminates any warpage. It will produce a better wear surface than the original.
