Hey Guys so i just got a new boat (well new to me) The title says its a 2005 Fl Vessel ive estimated it to be a 1977 glass master w 140 mercuriser engine.
2011-10-03_10.50.44.jpg
But upon inspection i had seen that the floor was a lil bit mushy but for 600 dollars for the boat and trailer i couldn't pass so now im in the middle of replacing the floor upon inspection the stringers and transom are in great shape
2011-10-03_12.48.49.jpg
They just never glassed the floor so it rotted away so im now at this point in the build
2011-10-04_11.49.04.jpg
Ive got one piece in but im now deciding to do all the floor from the transom up because the area under the gas tanks dosent look pretty but not to bad, so in an effort to save future aggravation i will do those now. so what i need is a suggestion as to what to use to prevent the new deck from water (i.e. Like Thompson water sealer) or any thing like that and what method should i take to glass the floor down after this is done. Thanks for reading my long post and any and all comment and suggestions or ideas of what type of boat this is are all welcome. Also does any one now how to find the model number on a mercuriser inboard i think it needs a new coil as to there is no spark.

Thanks Ryan

P.S.
I Have never worked w/ fiberglass but my grandfather who is helping me built his own 15' boat and fiber glassed it so Thanks Again

Hey there, Ryan, Welcome to Iboats :) I'm a bit confused. Are you doing the transom and the floor?

Thompson's water seal is crap. It has no place in a boat. Use poly resin + 1.5 oz CSM (chopped strand mat) for waterporofing the underside of the deck and a layer of 1708 bi ax on top.

Good luck and keep posting up with pics!!

Thanks Zopperman for your quick reply
As of right now all im am doin the deck from the transom (not actually touching anything to do w/ the transom that looks like it was recently replaced) all the way to the bow i was originally going to leave the gas tank and inboard area a lone but now i plan on pulling the tanks out and replacing that deck also and thanks for the information on the fiberglass. ill post some new detailed pics of what i mean tomorrow after work

NO problem. So your deck extends to the transom? Are you pulling the cap? Did you drill core samples of the stringers to affirm that they are OK?

I second the advice on doing core samples of everything if you haven't. Thick laid fiberglass can make things seem alot more solid than it is. It's a quick and simple check. If everything is all dry just seal the holes back up with some 3M 5200. Your on the right track though.. It's a nice looking boat!

Ok i have not drilled samples so that's just as simple as it sounds right just drill in a little and see how the wood looks, and no im not planing on pulling the top as to i have about 3 and a half feet of height around where the tanks are so i would be able to access it pretty easy like i said ill take some pics of the area tomorrow and thanks marada, still have no clue exactly what type of boat it is as to a make and model but it doesnt matter but now that i got this planed out all i have to do is execute it and get my engine to spark.

Yes it is as simple as it sounds... Drill holes along the stringer and the transom.. 1/4" 1/2"...Really doesn't matter. Be sure to check in a few different spots on the transom though. Mark your depth on the bit with tape if there's any concern with going to deep on the transom and hitting the hull... Dry wood shavings and your fine... If they are wet then you've got some more work to do. In my case it came back with nothing but black slime! But like I mentioned in the previous post... If all is dry and good be sure to seal the holes you drilled back up.

Btw... If you havent come across Jays resto thread check it out...

Great guy... his YouTube videos are a good tutorial on how to fiberglass everything.

Forgot to ask also... What are you needing to know about the motor? You just looking to know what size it is or are you trying to find the serial #?

Do the Stringers and Bulkheads have weep holes in them to allow drainage to the stern and or bilge of the boat? If not you should do that while you have them exposed. You might also consider filling the voids with pink or blue slab foam from Lowes. Adds floatation to your boat and really quiets the hull down.

thanks marada i think i found the numbers i will crosscheck it now and woodnglass yes they do have weep holes and the samples i took were good so that means one less headache to look forward to lol here are some pics of the area i have to work with around the gas tanks

that should be enough to put the wood and glass down right (obviously once the tanks are out)
also i have this like foot print of fiber glass the old deck was cut around any idea of why its there or is it better to leave it in instead of trying to cut it out

and does any one know about coil wiring can you tell me if this is wired right as you can see below there is a wire unhooked but when i make contact still no spark.

Re: 2005 Florida Vessel 19 FT deck rebuild

You want to get rid of ALL of the old deck.
I'm a force/chrysler guy (hopefully soon to be MErc ) So I don't know what's what in that engine. You need a manual or a schematic... is the engine turning over? any more info on it will be helpful in diagnosing?

I also think I/O's are the work of the devil. :D

Re: 2005 Florida Vessel 19 FT deck rebuild

I like them there cool and make the boat look seamless (but hey my opinion is only worth 8.80 an hour at least that's what they say at work lol) but the engine turns over, it has good compression (dont have the numbers i did a manual test) and its getting fuel the guy had a lot of work put into it but they never got it running (my bet is that wire has to do with something) i know how to work on engines that are electronic fuel and everything ive just never touched a carbed and distributed engine but hey they cant be to different (just like forward and reverse right HAHA)
thanks so what i see in your restore the guy told you to do CSM on both sides and tab the side of the wood with 1708 after you PB the gaps is that what you did?

Re: 2005 Florida Vessel 19 FT deck rebuild

Well, I had some unique issues. Basically, I had to cheat a bit to avoid pulling the cap, so what I did was glass both sides with 1708 (actually do to a mess up with my order). I glassed the underside of the sole outside the boat, then put in it, put PL on the stringers, glued the deck down with the PL, screwed it in, then put PB in the gaps, glassed the top with 1708 and tabbed into the hull. Mkae sure to PRE COAT EVERYTHING!! and grind away old glass on the hull till you get to fresh glass, yes, it really sucks.

and FWIW I happen to agree that IOs look better, but I just have never worked with one successfully (maybe thats because my first IO project had a blown head and basically needed a full rebuild) and find OBs much easier but shhh;)

Re: 2005 Florida Vessel 19 FT deck rebuild

Unfortunately, they won't let you come pick it up. For just the deck, 3 gals of resin, 5 qt or cabosil (probably could have done less) some chopped fibers, 9 yards of 1708. Or 5 yards 1708 and 5 yards 1.5 oz CSM. I gelcoated my deck... 1 gallon did 2.5 coats... I thinned the middle coat with styrene..
