2005 Johnson 90 cutting out and alarm sounding

I recently purchased a '93 sea pro 17' DC. It has a '05 Johnson 90 that usually fires right up and runs strong but this past weekend it struggled to crank then cut out after I got out into the river. It would crank but seemed to only run on 2 cylinders. Limped it to a landing, had a friend bring some new plugs which we put in only to have the same problem. Figured out that the primer bulb was not staying hard and managed to make it through the day by having someone constantly pump the bulb. However, later in the day while idling through a no wake a high pitch alarm started sounding every 2-3 secs. The motor was peeing good so did not suspect overheating. I changed the primer bulb the next day and put it in the water only to have the alarm sound immediatly and it cut out again. Is this the fuel/water separator causing the problem? Thanks for any help!

Does this engine run on a VRO system or fuel pump? If so ... there is your problem.

low oil alarm is a beep every 30 seconds. beep......................beep...................

no oil alarm is a beep every 1/2 second or so.beep, beep, beep

overheat alarm is a constant beep.beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep

sound like you have a oil and fuel delivery problem. but we need to know more about your motor, any recent maintenance? has it been sitting up a while? how long have you had it? any other history.

Re: 2005 Johnson 90 cutting out and alarm sounding

Its oil injected which I think is what the VRO stands for. The day I bought the boat up it cranked right up but the same buzzer was sounding while it was idling. The sellers agreed to let me take it for a pre-purchase inspection which I did and everything checked out. I mentioned the buzzer when I took it in and the shop said it never sounded when they were looking at it. I have had it out about 7 times with no problem until now. The compression was 120psi on all cylinders and the mechanic said the gear oil looked brand new. Supposedly it had less than 20hrs on it. It looks like the oil resevoir is a little under half full so maybe i'll try to fill it up and see if that stops the alarm. That still leaves me with the fuel problem. Still seems like the primer bulb is losing pressure even though i just replaced it and there are no leaks

the fuel primer bulb will not stay hard, once the motor starts, and the fuel pump starts pumping. all the bulb does is get fuel to the pump and carbs for starting.

you very well have a oil/fuel pump going bad. the are in the 350.00 range. you might consider changing to the premix fuel, and going with a straight fuel pump.

Hi, I have a similar issue. Maybe you guys have some guidance for me...

I have a 1987 175HP Johnson VRO. I get this beeping when I thrust the throttle to cruise real fast. In fact, I can't cruise real fast without this annoying beeping noise.

Any idea as to what this might be?

Thanks!

Re: 2005 Johnson 90 cutting out and alarm sounding

Hi Andy,

I've had the motor for 5 years and have it serviced regularly. This has been going on for awhile and I've ignored it. Now it's officially annoying. The oil well is full...I know about the oil alarm. It may be a fuel/oil delivery issue. Is there any treatment I can purchase to maybe remedy this?
Thanks again.

Cliff - you still haven't said what alarm is sounding, according to the chart posted above. Different alarms, different causes and solutions.

Out of the 3 beeping options you mentioned, the low oil heat beep is probably the closest one. However, I keep my oil tank full and replenish the oil as needed. I get the beeping sound when I suddenly throttle to a fast speed...when I floor it the beeping won't stop...

I get the continues beeeeeeeeeeeep, which according to an earlier post is an overheating alarm. I just had the thermostat replaced last summer, and the engine is still peeing ok and i can put my hand on the pee stream. any thoughts or ideas? Thanks!

maybe the sensor went bad, or it is a problem with the wiring. the horn itself could be grounding out....

Re: 2005 Johnson 90 cutting out and alarm sounding

I have been having similar problems off and on with my Evinrude 60 hp with VRO. If I go to premixing fuel/oil, do I have to disconnect the oil pump or just unplug the hose? If I have to disconnect something, what and where?
