I winterized my motor today, Here is a couple questions I hope you can answer:

I used the starbrite kit, and filled up container with 5 gallons of RV antifreeze. I ran the motor with ears, and siphoned the 5 gallons of RV antifreeze through motor and sterndrive.

Is this ok for leaving for winter, or do I still need to remove all the plugs, etc?

I also fogged the motor through the carb. Is this ok, or should I still remove all the plugs and fog?

I changed the oil and filter.

I filled the gas tank full and treated the gas with stabil.

Anything else I need to do?

If you want to be safe then pull all of the plugs and drain the block. That kit you bought assumes the tstat opens. Pretty risky.

ok, I will pull the plugs.

If I am correct, there is one plug on each exhaust manifold, one on each side of the block, and one on the front of the intake manifold, Correct? Or am I missing any?

This time of year, there are a lot of posts on how to winterize properly.
In the Adults Only and MUST HAVE Technical Information for DIYers. stickies at the top of this forum are HOW TO's and other information you need to keep your boat in top shape over the long winter and beyond.
Please take the time to look at this information before asking a question.
Chances are it's already covered in the above links.

UPDATE!

Thank you DON!. Ok here is the deal, This is what I did:

Bought the StarBrite Winterizing kit. Followed directions. Ran motor until It hit 160 on temp gauge, motor good and hot. then ran 5 gallons of RV antifreeze through.

When I got this post today, as soon as I got home, I opened the drain plugs.

BOTH side block drain plugs drained COMPLETELY CLEAR WATER, Probably 2 gallons worth. Both exhaust manifolds were full of RV ANTIFREEZE.

The intake plug drained very very little, but what it did drain looked clear like water.

I think Don saved me a BLOCK! Thanks Don!

I like the starbrite system, but I think you should completely drain the block first, then do the starbrite system as backup.

Also, Is the 4.3 oil capacity 4 or 5 quarts with filter change? I think I overfilled it by 1 quart. DARN! I thought it took 5 quarts, but it looks about a quart over on the dipstick.

Best to just siphon out the 1 quart?

4.3 with a filter change is 4.5qts of oil. That assumes that you get all the oil out of the bottom of the oil pan. I'd suck out around a qt or so and then check and add if necessary. Too much oil leads to foaming of the oil (bad) excessive engine wear (bad) and loss of power. I think trying to put in antifreeze can just lead to problems. Draining the block and manifolds properly is the way to go.

Should I try and drain the steering cooler? The one I have is in the back of the engine, and not very easy to get too. I did drain all block plugs, and manifold plugs.

you can either drain it now, or replace it in the spring after it cracks due to freeze damage. Your choice.

HI,

I will see if I can drain it tonight. Odd how nowhere in the winterizing procedure that it doesn't mention the steering cooler.

Most engines have the cooler at an angle so that when you remove the hoses from the raw water pump to drain them it also drains the cooler. But need to make sure it is angled toward that hose. The manuals are designed for Volvo techs, not DIYers. So they don't explain everything in perfect detail.

I am winterizing my 2001 V/P 4.3Gl this weekend and I thought I had it all covered until I read about draining the steering cooler. What is that all about? Where do I find it and make sure that it is drained properly?
Thanks.

I disconnected both hoses off the fresh water pump, and all of it drained. Luckily it was pure RV antifreeze.

Hey Don, If RV antifreeze was siphoned through the drive, would the steering cooler be full of RV antifreeze even if tstat was closed?

I believe I got it all out.
